In arun to first ever Uganda digital census slated for 9th May, Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS ) has trained 789 enumerators in digital census tabulation.

While addressing the participants who included UPDF, Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prison Services, OPM, MUK, Kyambogo University, Local Governments, Cities, Municipalities and UBOS staff, the National Census Commissioner/ Chief Statistician Dr Chris Mukiza expressed confidence that the 789 trainees will cascade the training down to Sub county supervisors who will then train others.

Mukiza however warned enumerators against miss use of tablets during the census exercise.

“Avoid presenting our tablets as security for loans. We have alerted police and other security agencies to arrest you once they are lost. These tablets are property of Uganda,” Mukiza said.

Mukiza thanked government for funding census exercise to the tune of shs 320billion and pledged to deliver quality census exercise for planning purposes like implementing Parish Development Model programs, Emyooga, Youth Live hood programs, infrastructure and social services provision.

Mukiza appealed to local leaders,religious leaders, politicians and security agencies to collaborate with the Bureau to ensure Uganda rolls out successful census exercise

The UBOS Board chairperson, Dr. Albert Byamugisha mentioned that the training was essential in equipping all participants with technical knowledge on the use of digital CAPI and also introducing them to the Census tools and questionnaires to ensure that enumeration runs smoothly.

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Act, 1998 provides for the development and maintenance of a National Statistical System (NSS) to ensure collection, analysis and publication of integrated, relevant, reliable and timely statistical information.

It established the Bureau as the coordinating, monitoring and supervisory body for the National Statistical System.

In addition to being the source of official statistical information, the Bureau is responsible for:

providing high quality central statistics information services;
promoting standardisation in the collection, analysis and publication of statistics to ensure uniformity in quality, adequacy of coverage and reliability of statistics information;
providing guidance, training and other assistance as may be required to other users and providers of statistics;
promoting cooperation, coordination and rationalization among users and providers of statistics at national and local levels so as to avoid duplication of effort and ensure optimal utilization of scarce resources;
promoting and being the focal point of cooperation with statistics users and providers at regional and international levels.
