8,000 JOBS: UGANDA POLICE SEEKS GRADUATE CADETS TO FIGHT CYBER AND FINANCIAL CRIME

The Uganda Police Force is launching a massive nationwide recruitment drive to hire 8,000 new personnel. This recruitment includes an ambitious intake of 3,000 professional cadet officers selected from university graduates, alongside 5,000 general-duty positions to replace officers lost to retirement, desertion, and attrition.

This phased recruitment strategy is scheduled to begin before the end of this year and will continue into the next financial year. The historic hiring surge aims to eliminate persistent staff shortages and fully operationalize the newly rolled-out sub-county policing model spearheaded by Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba.

In a strategic shift toward modern, intelligence-led law enforcement, the Force is prioritizing specialized university graduates to inject immediate technical skills into its ranks, bypassing the need to send serving officers back to school. The targeted professional fields include:

  • Information Technology (IT): To spearhead cybercrime investigations, analyze data, and manage digital forensics.
  • Accounting & Finance: To trace illicit financial flows and examine complex corporate records in financial crime cases.
  • Engineering: To assist in technical probes regarding arson, structural infrastructure failures, and construction fraud.
  • Medicine & Sciences: To strengthen forensic capabilities, medico-legal services, and environmental science assessments.
  • Humanities & Legal: Specializations in Law, Psychology, Social Work, and Communication to reinforce legal departments, victim support, and community liaisons.

While selected candidates enter with specialized degrees, all recruits will undergo mandatory, rigorous police training. The academic qualifications are designed to complement—not replace—traditional policing protocols. Historically, the cadet officer pathway remains the premier fast-track pipeline into senior command structures of the Uganda Police Force.

This recruitment directly supports IGP Abas Byakagaba’s mandate to modernize the force through surveillance, forensic evidence, and community cooperation. Under the full rollout of the sub-county policing model, every local station will be heavily reinforced with general-duty personnel alongside specialized units from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), Crime Intelligence, and Family and Child Protection.

The official recruitment timelines, regional centers, and specific eligibility criteria will be published in the gazette and national media channels in the coming weeks. Prospective applicants are advised to prepare their academic transcripts and certificates ahead of the official launch.
