THE RACE TO SAVE LIVES AMIDST UGANDA’S NATIONAL BLOOD CRISIS

A severe healthcare crisis that claims nearly 4,000 Ugandan mothers every year collided with the pavement on Sunday, as a massive crowd of citizens took over the Kampala Northern Bypass in a high-stakes race to halt the country’s preventable maternal mortality epidemic.

The second edition of the Independence Marathon, staged at the Metroplex Shopping Mall in Naalya, weaponized athletics into an urgent fundraising machine under the banner, “Save a Mother.” In a historic first, runners completely commandeered the bypass, stretching a grueling 42-kilometre route from Namboole to Busega to secure life-saving resources for women bleeding out during childbirth.

Uganda faces a relentless national blood deficit, requiring approximately 450,000 units annually. This structural shortfall leaves healthcare facilities paralyzed, directly driving a crisis where Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH)—excessive bleeding after delivery—remains the leading killer of mothers nationwide, causing nearly 35% of all maternal deaths.

Clinical experts warn that a mother suffering from severe PPH can bleed to death in less than two hours without a rapid blood transfusion.

The ultimate target of the race is structural: funding a modern, critical cold storage facility at the Mengo Rotary Blood Bank to process and preserve blood supplies for delivery complications, accident victims, and emergency patients.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Diana Atwine, who led from the front as chief runner, stripped away standard public relations rhetoric to issue a blunt ultimatum to the nation.

“Saving a mother requires all of us to play our part,” Atwine declared. “Every contribution towards strengthening maternal healthcare can make the difference between life and death.”

Marathon organizer Robert Kabushenga rallied the crowd, labeling the annual event a hardline movement rather than a standard sports gala. “Every person who registers, runs, or walks is contributing towards saving the lives of mothers across Uganda,” Kabushenga said.

The private sector lined up behind the cause to confront the infrastructure gap. Stanbic Bank Uganda anchored the corporate intervention alongside Old Mutual, TMR Hospital, and Jet Tour, framing the crisis as an economic and moral emergency.

“No woman should lose her life while giving life,” said Stanbic Bank Uganda Chief Executive Mumba Kalifungwa, pointing to the severe lack of reliable blood storage facilities. Kalifungwa noted the bank’s backing aligns with its 35-year impact agenda, specifically targeting the lethal threat of PPH through beefed-up blood bank infrastructure.

Medical officials from TMR Hospital confirmed the event concluded with zero serious health casualties among the runners, turning the focus entirely back to the ongoing fundraising campaign.
