Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has praised President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) for maintaining peace and stability in the country during the swearing-in of Members of Parliament-elect for the 12th Parliament
Speaking as Woman Representative for Bukedea District,Among thanked President Museveni for what she described as the trust he has placed in her leadership.
“I want to thank President Yoweri Museveni who has entrusted me with a very big responsibility of running this Parliament. I am highly indebted to him, and I also thank the security forces for maintaining peace in this country. I wish all Ugandans the very best and congratulate President Museveni upon his swearing-in,” Among said.
Speaker urged newly elected MPS to focus on the needs of ordinary Ugandans and dedicate themselves fully to public service.
“As you heard yesterday, this is ‘Kisanja No Sleep.’ We must work for the citizens and for humanity and concentrate on what affects the local person,” she said.
Among also commended the performance of the 11th Parliament, describing it as one of the most productive legislative sessions in Uganda’s history.
“The 11th Parliament has been a very good Parliament. We have done a lot of work. It is one of the most remarkable parliaments we have had in the history of Parliament,” she added.
Unlike other politicans Anita Among loyalists lined up the roads to Parliament and staged loud cheers as she arrived for the swearing-in ceremony at Parliament.
Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige read the official proclamation and cited the constitutional provisions authorizing him to administer the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Member of Parliament.
After swearing in, legislators signed the official oath book, underwent biometric registration and took official photographs before addressing the media.
By end of day one about 180 Legislators had sworn in at Parliament ceremony due to close on Friday with renewed energy to deliver their manifesto pledges.
