Electric motorcycle company Spiro Uganda has announced plans to set up seven more mega battery-swapping hubs by December 2026, bringing the total to 11, as demand for electric two-wheelers rises.

The company currently operates four mega hubs in Mukono, Soroti, Jinja and Bukoto in Kampala. According to Spiro, the hubs support its network of more than 360 battery-swapping stations across the country, where riders exchange depleted batteries for charged ones.

Bruce Mucunguzi, the company’s Deputy Country Director, said expanding the swapping network and supporting riders with maintenance and spare parts will boost the  demand as more Ugandans switch to electric motorcycles.

Mucunguzi attributed the uptake of Spiro’s motorcycles to safe riding and after-sales support as the electric motorcycle market grows and to business models that address barriers to customer demand and satisfaction.

Launched operations on June 1, 2024, deploying over 15,000 electric motorcycles across 70 districts and operating more than 360 battery-swapping stations (including 4 mega-hubs in Mukono, Soroti, Jinja, and Bukoto in Kampala, with 7 more mega-hubs planned by December 2026

Spiro holds a dominant and commanding market share in Uganda’s rapidly growing electric motorcycle sector, effectively operating as the clear industry leader. While precise percentage metrics fluctuate due to a massive influx of new registrations, multiple data vectors highlight their market-defining position

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Uganda’s entire electric two-wheeler market across all brands sat at just over 30,000 units registered by the end of last year 1.34. With Spiro expanding its fleet past 33,000 active units 1.21, they account for the vast majority of the active electric motorcycle market in the country, comfortably outcompeting rivals like Gogo and Zembo.

Projections based on monthly registration numbers indicate that Spiro captures between 25% to 42% of all new motorcycle sales (both electric and petrol fuel-powered combined) in Uganda, driven heavily by aggressive lease-to-own models.

Allan Muhumuza, team leader of the Mobility Bureau at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, said government policies were attracting more players into the sector.

He said installed electric vehicle production capacity had grown to 79,000 units a year in 2025, and that 25,000 electric vehicles, mainly two-wheelers, had been manufactured locally.

In arelated development Eng Derick Birimumaso, a senior official at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, has called for the development of standards and regulations for electric vehicle infrastructure.

Eng Birimumaso named the safety of vehicles, users and batteries, accessible charging and the security of users as priorities. He said the regulations being drafted would also cover energy metering, tariffs, billing and licensing.
