KAMPALA, UGANDA — The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) hosted a special Retirement Meet and Greet at the International Resource Centre (IREC) in Bugolobi, honoring staff members who retired between January and July 2026. Spearheaded by Director of Human Resources Ms. Eunice Alanyo, the event celebrated the dedicated years of service rendered by the retirees while offering practical guidance on navigating and securing life after formal employment.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Silver Mugisha commended the Human Resources Directorate for the initiative and stressed the urgent need to prepare employees for retirement while they are still in active service. He underscored the vital role of financial literacy in achieving long-term independence and security.
“Invest in unit trusts, bonds and NSSF so that you are able to get the maximum benefit from the money you have,” Dr. Mugisha advised, noting that sound financial decisions made during active working years lay the groundwork for a stable future.
Central to his address was a framework for holistic success summed up in the acronym HEND: Hard Work, Entrepreneurship, Networking, and Discipline. He elaborated that hard work builds resilience and steers individuals clear of shortcuts, while entrepreneurship creates alternative revenue streams that outlast formal jobs. Furthermore, he noted that intentional networking unlocks valuable knowledge and collaborative prospects, and discipline provides the self-control required to sustainably manage resources and achieve long-term objectives. Beyond HEND, he encouraged staff to cultivate time management, integrity, consistency, a positive attitude, empathy, and teamwork.
Turning his attention to the retirees, Dr. Mugisha expressed deep gratitude for their diverse contributions to NWSC’s institutional growth and service delivery. He reaffirmed the Corporation’s steadfast commitment to honoring long service, noting that qualifying employees who retire after at least 25 years of service are entitled to lifetime medical care.
Emphasizing that retirement does not sever ties with the organization, Dr. Mugisha described the retirees as an invaluable “reserve task force” possessing rich institutional knowledge. He explained that individuals possessing specialized skills could still be engaged on special contracts whenever the Corporation requires their expertise.
For employees currently in active service, his directive remained direct and actionable: remain relevant, continuously develop specialized competencies, and commence retirement planning early. He urged staff to make themselves indispensable while proactively preparing for the transition ahead, viewing retirement not as an end, but as a purposeful new chapter.
