THE BATTLE ON LAKE VICTORIA: HOW UGANDA STUNNED THE CONTINENT

In a historic sporting milestone, Uganda has officially taken center stage on Lake Victoria as the host of Africa’s first-ever Dragon Boat Racing competition, transforming the waters of Kawuku, Wakiso District, into a high-stakes arena of international diplomacy, sports tourism, and geopolitical unity.
The three-day blockbuster event, organized under the African Dragon Boat Federation (ADADB), transcends mere athleticism. Launching amidst the historic 70th anniversary of China-Africa people-to-people relations, the tournament has drawn powerhouses from across the continent—including Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa—alongside elite elite guest teams from international hubs Hong Kong and Singapore.
Officiating at the landmark event, Special Presidential Assistant Alhaji Kirunda issued a blunt and forward-looking mandate: sporting events must be leveraged as hard economic drivers to deepen international cooperation, unlock vast investment opportunities, and aggressively market Uganda’s tourism potential.
In a keynote address delivered by Jimmy Nambiro, State House Private Secretary for Education and Skilling, Alhaji Kirunda conveyed strong greetings from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, commending China and participating nations for backing this historic debut.
“We celebrate 70 years when Africa is enjoying good relations with China, and that is something that we must uphold,” Kirunda declared, framing the dragon boat race not just as a game, but as an active platform for cross-border collaboration and corporate investment. “You cannot separate sports from tourism. This event is an avenue for people to come, visit, enjoy, and also invest.”
Beyond business, the state emphasized the revolutionary inclusivity of the sport, noting that its structure opens competitive pathways for athletes with physical disabilities. Kirunda further issued a firm pledge of total government backing to permanently anchor the federation’s growth in Ugandan soil.
The strategy is already yielding results. ADBF President Ehab Gouda revealed that the federation is actively auditing Uganda to become the permanent continental hub for all African dragon boat operations. Gouda lauded President Museveni’s administration for its rapid mobilization and seamless logistical support. Meanwhile, ADBF Secretary General Mary Lai emphasized that the tournament marks a permanent shift in reinforcing structural ties between Chinese and African communities.
On the water, the atmosphere remains hyper-competitive. Continental heavyweights have spent months engineering their squads for this moment. Kenyan representative Fredrick Ominde and Uganda’s own Peter Lwanga both confirmed their teams completed grueling, two-month high-intensity training camps specifically for this showdown.
With international race officials like Singapore’s Jason Chen commanding the tracks, and battle-tested foreign captains like Egypt’s Munir Hilmi and South Africa’s Idries Meyer and Ibrahim Abrahams on the grid, the stakes could not be higher.
As the local favorites, the Uganda Federation Dragon Team remains fiercely confident. “We have been training for this event… for some good years,” Lwanga warned rivals. “The Ugandan team is optimistic that it will emerge victorious.”
