Under the theme:“Leveraging Innovations in Data and Statistics to Promote a Just, Peaceful, Inclusive, and Prosperous Society for Africans.” Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS)  joins other African National Statistical Offices (NSOs) in celebrating this year’s Africa Statistics Day on November 18, 2025.

Africa Statistics Week is an annual event, usually held in November, to raise public awareness about the importance of statistics and their role in social and economic development across the continent.

MR DIDAUCS OKOTH HEAD OF PUBLIC RELATIONS AT UBOS ADDRESSING THE PRESS

The week-long celebration, which culminates in  Africa Statistics Day  on November 18th, involves various activities like forums, workshops, and media engagements led by national statistical offices to promote data use and strengthen statistical systems.

The theme each year focuses on a specific aspect of statistical modernization and its impact on development, such as supporting Sustainable Peace or Leveraging Innovation.

Addressing the media in Kampala Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, UBOS Executive Director and Chief Statistician noted that the Bureau will focus on four key areas during the commemorations — highlighting innovations, promoting inclusivity, fostering collaboration, and empowering evidence-based decision-making.

UBOS OFFICIAL EMOHASING THE IMPORTANCE OF DATA AND INNOVATION TO THE MEDIA

“This year’s theme echoes UBOS’s continued commitment to harness modern data production technologies to generate quality statistics for national development,” Dr. Mukiza stated.

He further revealed that throughout the Africa Statistics Week, UBOS will showcase the latest technological advancements in data collection, analysis, and dissemination in Uganda. The activities will engage stakeholders from various sectors, including government agencies, academia, civil society, and the general public.

UBOS  has  encouraged data sharing and collaboration among producers, users, and innovators in the statistics field.

“ Public awareness campaigns will educate Ugandans about the importance of accurate data in shaping national policies and generating informed public debate,”Mukiza stressed.

UBOS Head of Public Relations Didacus Okoth Stold the media that the celebration will feature a week long lineup of events aimed at highlighting the transformative role of modern data technologies in fostering evidence-based planning and decision-making.

According to Mr   Didacus Okoth some of the key activities lined up for the week include:dissemination of the National Governance, Peace, and Security Survey report,Media engagements to promote statistical literacy,Blood donation drives as part of UBOS’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives,Celebration of Geo-Information Systems (GIS) Day and Annual Gender Statistics Forum, among others.

UBOS noted that while physical participation in the events will be by invitation only, all activities will be streamed live on national television stations and social media platforms to reach a wider audience.

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) is the official government agency in Uganda responsible for collecting, processing, analyzing, and disseminating official statistics. Established by the UBOS Act in 1998, it serves as the principal body for coordinating and supervising the country’s national statistical system. UBOS is tasked with providing reliable and timely data to support policy-making and decision-making across Uganda
