POLICE CALLS FOR CALM AS AHEAD OF POLLING DAY

Uganda Police Force has issued a strong appeal for calm, restraint, and peaceful participation in the electoral process.

Addressing the Media the Director of Counter Terrorism and Crime Prevention at the Uganda Police Force, AIGP Bamunoba Ubaldo, cautioned citizens against engaging in criminal acts under the guise of political competition.

“There is no justification whatsoever for engaging in criminal acts in the name of elections,” AIGP Bamunoba said, urging the public to reject violence even in the face of provocation by political opponents. He emphasized that peaceful participation in elections is a clear sign of political maturity and a cornerstone of a democratic society.

The senior police officer called on citizens to promptly report any incidents of violence, intimidation, or disorder to the nearest police station or security authority to enable swift and appropriate action.

AIGP Bamunoba assured the country that the Uganda Police Force, working in close coordination with other security agencies, remains fully committed to securing the electoral process at all levels. He noted that Uganda has made significant strides in the management of elections over the years, gains he said must be protected through collective responsibility and respect for the rule of law.

“As a country, we have made significant progress in the management of elections, and it is our collective responsibility to safeguard these gains by promoting peaceful engagement,” he said.

He also directed a pointed message to those seeking leadership positions, reminding them that ethical leadership begins with disciplined and lawful conduct during campaigns. According to AIGP Bamunoba, effective leadership can only be realized by individuals who uphold high standards of responsibility, discipline, and respect for democratic principles.

Above all, he stressed that peace must remain the defining value before, during, and after the elections, warning that instability threatens not only the credibility of the electoral process but also the country’s future.

“It is only through peace that we can protect our democracy and ensure a stable and prosperous future for our nation,” he said.

The police appeal comes as the country braces for polling day, with authorities and stakeholders urging all Ugandans to play their part in ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process.
