GLOBAL INSTITUTE OF IT AND BUSINESS UNVEILS DIGITAL VOCATIONAL TRAINING MODEL

The Global Institute of IT and Business, Makerere (Gi-IT), a pioneer in digital vocational training, has unveiled a new blended learning model aimed at redefining practical skills acquisition across Uganda.

The strategic transition, aimed at widening access and aligning training with modern demands, will combine e-learning platforms, scheduled virtual lectures, and periodic face-to-face sessions.

With campuses in Makerere – Kampala and Njeru in Buikwe District, Gi-IT has positioned itself at the forefront of e-learning and innovation, combining physical training with remote, real-time access to instructors, including those based overseas.

The model, according to the Institute officials, is tailored to equip learners with hands-on practical competencies while offering the flexibility of studying from any location.

“We are not abandoning the classroom, we’re expanding it,” said Mr. Ben Opolot, the Director. “We are harnessing technology to bring quality, skills-based education directly to our students, wherever they are.”

While the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated global interest in remote learning, Mr Opolot noted that the institute’s shift is a long-term strategy rather than a temporary adaptation. With Uganda’s youth population rising and digital infrastructure improving, he sees blended learning as a timely solution for broadening educational reach and relevance.

Under the new system, students will access courses such as Accounting & Finance, Journalism and Mass Communication, IT, Business Administration, Videography, and Catering through online lectures, 24/7 e-resources, and interactive assignments. These will be complemented by occasional hands-on training at designated centers.

What is critical about this blended learning is that all programs will continue to meet regulatory standards, with accreditation from the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) and Uganda Vocational and Training Assessment Board (UVTAB), and students will still sit national assessments and graduate with recognized qualifications.

The same was reaffirmed by Principal John Paul Mugisha, emphasizing the institute’s commitment to producing job-ready graduates. “Online learning is not a compromise, it’s an upgrade,” he said. “We are building a system that trains self-driven, tech-savvy graduates ready for the future of work.”

Gi-IT is a leading talent development institution, building skilled manpower pool for national and global industry requirements. Gi-IT is among Kampala’s leading talent development companies offering learning solutions to individuals, enterprises and institutions across the nation.

The institute continues to offer DIT-approved short courses in addition to diploma programs in areas like ICT, entrepreneurship, solar energy systems, and plumbing.
