Professor Dorothy Okello, Dean of the School of Engineering at Makerere University’s College of Engineering, Design, Art, and Technology (CEDAT), has been appointed as the inaugural Chairperson of the Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB).

Professor Moses Musinguzi, Principal of CEDAT, expressed confidence that Professor Okello’s expertise will significantly contribute to advancing Uganda’s technical education sector. The CEDAT community and colleagues nationwide have extended their congratulations to Professor Okello on this prestigious achievement.

As Chairperson of UVTAB, Professor Okello will oversee the assessment and certification of competencies obtained through formal and informal vocational or technical education and training. UVTAB operates under the Ministry of Education and Sports and plays a crucial role in shaping the quality of technical and vocational education in Uganda.

The appointment marks a pivotal moment in Uganda’s education sector, with expectations that Professor Okello’s leadership will drive workforce readiness and human capital development in the country.

With extensive experience in engineering education, skills development, and vocational training, Professor Okello is expected to strengthen the connection between vocational education and university-level training in Uganda. Her leadership will enhance technical and vocational education in alignment with national development goals.

she is Founder of Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET), established in 2000, with a mission to promote and support the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) by women and women organizations in Uganda.

The Uganda Vocational and Technical Assessment Board (UVTAB) is a national corporate body established by Act No.81 of Parliament of Uganda- the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Act 2025, Clause 77, Section 2(a). UVTAB operates under the Ministry of Education and Sports.

UVTAB is a national leader in the assessment and certification of competencies obtained through TVET, offering a wide range of qualifications across various sectors. Established in 2025, UVTAB is committed to building a reputation for high-quality assessment and certification of competencies, providing individuals and world of work with the requisite skills and knowledge needed to drive socio-economic transformation and national development.
