Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has elected 10 new military representatives to serve in the next Parliament for the 2026–2031 term.
The election, conducted through the Defence Forces Council electoral college, took place at the Land Forces headquarters in Bombo, Luweero district on Wednesday. The process is in line with the Constitution and the Parliamentary Elections Act, which recognises the UPDF as one of several special interest groups in Parliament alongside district and city women representatives, youth representatives, workers, and persons with disabilities.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), chaired by Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, oversaw the election. Returning Officer Diana Kateeba Tumusiime announced the results after a careful tally of votes.
The Defence Forces Council meeting was chaired by President and Commander-in-Chief of the UPDF, General (Retired) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Members of the council include the UPDF High Command, senior officers who have served since 26 January 1986, chiefs and directors of services, commandants of training institutions, brigade and battalion commanders, as well as regional reserve force commanders and the Defence Forces Sergeant Major.
During the same event, the President also commissioned three Officer Cadets who completed their training abroad in December 2025. They are 2Lt Bazalaki Tikula, trained in Sri Lanka, and 2Lt Moses Ekoi and 2Lt Piloya Vivian, both trained in Tanzania.
The newly elected representatives will join Parliament as part of the UPDF’s constitutional mandate to participate in legislative processes, providing input on national security and defence matters.
