KIU RETAINS POSITION AS BEST PRIVATE UNIVERSITY

Kampala International University (KIU) has retained its position as Uganda’s highest-ranked private university, placed second nationally and among Africa’s top 50 universities in the latest July 2026 Webometrics Ranking of Universities.

The latest ranking comes shortly after KIU staff and students participated in the prestigious Erasmus+ Exchange Programme at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) in Türkiye, an initiative expected to strengthen international academic partnerships and enhance the university’s global visibility and competitiveness.

KIU Vice-Chancellor Prof Muhammed Ngoma, who is taking part in the exchange programme, described the experience as an important milestone in the university’s internationalisation agenda.

“It is a very fulfilling experience, full of networking, benchmarking, experience sharing and lots of lessons as far as higher education is concerned,” Ngoma said.

The Erasmus+ programme, one of the European Union’s flagship higher education initiatives, brings together universities from Europe and partner countries to promote academic mobility, research collaboration, innovation, curriculum development and institutional capacity building.

Ngoma said KIU’s participation goes beyond a routine exchange programme, describing it as a strategic investment in internationalisation, an increasingly important factor in global university rankings, which assess research impact, academic collaboration, digital presence and institutional visibility.

He said the programme provides an opportunity for universities to exchange knowledge, strengthen research partnerships and explore new areas of collaboration in teaching and institutional development.

“Internationalisation is no longer optional for universities that aspire to global relevance. Through Erasmus+, KIU is strengthening partnerships, sharing knowledge, expanding research networks and exposing our staff and students to the best international practices. These collaborations improve academic quality while increasing the University’s global visibility and reputation,” Ngoma said.

Erasmus+ is the European Union’s flagship programme supporting education, training, youth and sport. Rather than funding individual applicants, the programme facilitates partnerships between higher education institutions to promote student and staff mobility, curriculum innovation, collaborative research, digital transformation and institutional development.

Participating universities benefit from student exchange opportunities, faculty teaching assignments, professional staff training, joint academic programmes and collaborative research initiatives.

One of the programme’s key components, Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE), has become particularly significant for African universities by supporting improvements in academic programmes, governance, digital learning, entrepreneurship and research infrastructure.

Beyond the current exchange, KIU said its partnership with Ondokuz Mayıs University is expected to generate long-term benefits through joint research projects, staff development, academic exchanges and expanded international collaboration, further strengthening the university’s global profile.
