UBOS COMMISSIONS 80 DATA COLLECTORS FOR THE 9TH UGANDA NATIONAL HOUSE HOLD SURVEY

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has officially commissioned 80 field data collectors following the successful completion of a 15-day training in preparation for the 9th Round of the Uganda National Household Survey (UNHS) 2026/27.

The trained personnel have been organized into 16 teams, each led by a Field Supervisor and in order to enhance effective communication and data quality, the teams were strategically constituted based on language proficiency, ensuring smooth interaction between field interviewers and respondents across different regions.

The data collection exercise for the 9th UNHS is expected to run for a period of 12 months, allowing for comprehensive coverage of sampled households and communities nationwide.

While commissioning the data collectors, the Executive Director of UBOS, Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, emphasized the importance of professionalism, integrity, and adherence to ethical standards. He urged the field staff to uphold the Oath of Secrecy and Oath of Office they had taken, particularly stressing the confidentiality of information collected.

“You must ensure that the information you collect remains confidential. Do not disclose sources of data,” Dr. Mukiza noted, referencing the Uganda Bureau of Statistics Act, 1998, which guarantees data protection and statistical independence.

He further cautioned the data collectors to accurately record information as provided by respondents, warning that any alteration compromises data quality. “Record the information as it is given. Do not change anything. The data you collect is critical for planners and policymakers in improving the lives of Ugandans,” he emphasized.

Dr. Mukiza also warned against indiscipline and poor performance, noting that individuals who fail to meet the required standards risk dismissal and possible exclusion from future survey engagements. He underscored that the production of reliable statistics begins with credible and accurate data collection processes.

The Uganda National Household Survey is a key national survey program that generates data on critical socio-economic indicators, including education, health, housing conditions, and food security. The survey plays a vital role in assessing poverty levels, monitoring socio-economic trends, and evaluating household welfare in line with national and international development frameworks.

UBOS released the report of the 8th Round of the UNHS in May 2025. The 9th Round (2026/27) will build on previous surveys by generating updated and reliable statistical data to support evidence-based planning, policy formulation, monitoring and evaluation of development programs, and informed public debate.
