Jacqueline Mbabazi, wife to politician Amama Mbabazi has been nominated to contest in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries for the Elderly MP seat representing Western Uganda.

In a media interface Jacqueline Mbabazi said she seeks to leverage her experience in public service to advocate rights and needs of older citizens in the region.

She previously served as Commissioner for Customs and Excise Duty at the Uganda Revenue Authority and later became the Managing Director of Luwero Industries Ltd, a government-owned manufacturing firm.

Jacqueline Mbabazi says her decision to run for the Elderly MP seat is driven by her concern for the welfare of older persons in Western Uganda. She aims to push for better healthcare services, including access to health insurance, and protect the property rights of the elderly. Her plans also include supporting the creation of Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) to help older people access government funding and improve their livelihoods.

Born on 18th August 1954,she is a Ugandan educator, politician and businesswoman. She served as the Chairperson of the Women’s League in the National Resistance Movement (NRM), the ruling political party in Uganda.

she was born in Rukungiri District on 18th August 1954 and is the daughter of Canon Gereshomu and Evalina Ruhindi.

Jacqueline Mbabazi attended several primary schools in Kabale district, where her father worked for the Church of Uganda. She attented Bweranyange Girls Secondary School in Bushenyi District for her O’Level education. She then transferred to Trinity College Nabingo for her A’Level studies. In 1973, she joined  Makerere University graduating in 1976, with tBachelor Degree in Education.

Following her studies at Makerere University, she taught at  Kitante Hill Secondary School, between 1976 until 1981. Following her return from exile in 1988, she worked with the Uganda Ministry of Defense, to set up the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), a government organization that aimed to re-integrate retired soldiers from the Uganda Bush War into civilian life.

She was one of the Ugandan technocrats who founded the Uganda Revenue AUTHORITY (URA) in 1992. Her initial position at the URA was Assistant Commissioner for Customs and Excise. She later became Deputy Commissioner and then Commissioner for Customs and Excise. In 1999, she left the Uganda Revenue Authority, to form, along with others, the Agency for National Development, a Non-Governmental Organization to help youth and women. She served as a non-Executive Director and Head of Training. After 3 years in that position, she served as the Managing Direcror of Luweero Industries Limited, a government-owned small-arms manufacturer. She retired from government service.

On 8 December 2017 Mbabazi was appointed as chairperson for the board of directors of the Uganda Microfinance Regulatory Authority

Following her retirement from civil service, she now works full-time for the Agency for National Development and also Lay Canon in the Church of Uganda.

Meanwhile John Patrick Amama Mbabazi, a seasoned politician, has been instrumental in Uganda’s political landscape. He served as Uganda’s Prime Minister and has held various other significant positions in government. His experience and understanding of politics will undoubtedly be invaluable to his wife’s campaign.
