GUDIE  LEISURE FARM TO  HOLD  BIGGEST PIGGERY BUSINESS  GATHERING THIS  DECEMBER

Gudie Leisure Farm a Kampala  agribusiness  training centre  will  host thousands of youth in its second national agri-cottage industry business gathering  focusing on Piggery Cottage Industry Symposium at  its premises in Najjera II, Kira Municipality.

Gudie Leisure Farm (GLF) is a social enterprise established in 2009 to transform African agribusiness by empowering Youth with Practical agribusiness skills.

Slated for8th  December ,Prof Gudula  says the  gathering is designed to equip actors in the piggery value chain—especially young entrepreneurs—with practical skills, market knowledge, and strategic insights that can help them run competitive ventures capable of transforming communities and accelerating national development.

“The symposium is part of a wider effort to build local investor confidence and expand awareness of the numerous business opportunities embedded in the piggery value chain .This is the second in our series of knowledge-exchange forums. Our intention is to ensure that Ugandan investors, especially upcoming agripreneurs, clearly understand where the opportunities lie within the chain and what it takes to tap into them successfully,” she explained.

“We want young people to understand that this value chain holds immense wealth at every stage. By attending, they will meet industry leaders, learn best practices, and discover new market opportunities,” she stressed.

MAN SELLING PORK IN KAMPALA

According to Gudula, the Farm has built a network of 388,513 Youth Agripreneur Champions (55% women) and 226,254 Youth Agriclub Agripreneurs in over 41 districts in Uganda

According to 2021 National Livestock Census,an estimated 2.2 million households depend on pig farming, with Uganda’s pig population standing at about 7.1 million.

However Gudula  says global trends indicates that  pork is projected to be the second-largest contributor to the growth in global meat consumption by 2032, with expected consumption rising to 93 metric tons. Additionally, the global pork market—valued at USD 307 million in 2024—is forecast to reach USD 424.4 million by 2030.

“With a growing local population and expanding regional markets across the EAC, COMESA, and the broader African continent, value-added piggery products offer enormous commercial possibilities. Our mission is to prepare local value chain actors to meet international standards and seize these opportunities,” she stated.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Agribusiness Alliance (UAA) Francis Kisirinya, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that piggery represents one of the high-potential value chains in the region’s agricultural sector.

He noted that strong economic projections across East Africa reinforce the need to channel investment into emerging agribusiness sectors with significant upside.

“The steady rise in demand for agricultural and processed products from our value chains signals tremendous opportunities for young people and smallholder farmers who are looking for reliable, profitable markets.” Kisirinya stressed.

“Effective collaboration and a shared business agenda are  essential if we are to attract catalytic investment, optimize available resources, and leverage private-sector innovation. This alignment is key to achieving Uganda’s aspirations under the forthcoming NDP IV and the Ten-Fold Growth Strategy, which targets raising GDP to USD 500 billion by 2040,” he stated.

Gudie Leisure Farm has positioned itself as a leader in transforming Uganda’s piggery sector. The social enterprise conducts weekly piggery training sessions and has so far trained 45 district pig inseminators tasked with improving genetic quality for increased productivity. These inseminators collectively serve more than 120,000 youth engaged in feed production, pig rearing, and pig value-addition enterprises.
