The Chairperson of Electoral Commission has advised the general public to go and check for their names in the voter register to confirm the ir voting ability ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The Electoral Commission on  25th April 2025, officially started displaying the final voters register of all 308315 polling stations throughout the country.

Justice Simon Byabakama said this is going to be the final list for all elections starting with special interest groups, president, members of parliament, and the district local leaders”.

“I therefore appeal to all Ugandans who have already registered to go to the polling stations to verify whether their names are spelled correctly and to make sure they have the right photos against their names on the register,”Byabakama said.

“That exercise ended, if you changed your names, you must write to the commission and the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) must certify that you changed names,”he added.

He said that registers for the special interest groups will be displayed for 8 days from April 25, 2025 to May 8, 2025.

Justice Byabakama said that the registers are being displayed at 308315 polling stations except 620 whose lists did not come of the system due to a technical problem at the commission which is being rectified.

The 620 polling stations include Aura City 2, Buikwe 1, Buvuma 1, Fortportal City 3, Kampala 18, Kassanda 2, Kikuube 15, Kiryandongo 78, Kitagwenda 1,Masaka City 2, Mbarara City 48, Mityana 370, Mpigi 46, Mukono 32, and 13 in Wakiso districts.

“When we start displaying in those areas we shall also give them 21 days as the law states to give voters ample time and for those who would know those who don’t qualify to be on the list should do it using our forms that will be used to identify the bona fide voters to be identified by the parish tribunal” he affirmed.

This tribunal he said is to be comprised of five people of whom two are senior citizens and three others from the political parties whose representatives will be identified by the judge.

The display officers will be at those stations from 8,00am to 6.00pm every day including weekends for the 21 days.

The Electoral Commission was set up under Article 60 of the 1995 Constitution of The Republic of Uganda. It consists of the Chairman, Deputy Chairperson and five other members appointed by the President with the approval of Parliament and a Secretariat headed by the Secretary.

The functions of the EC are outlined under Article 61 of the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda as follows;

(a) To ensure that regular, free and fair elections are held;

(b) To organize, conduct and supervise elections and referenda in accordance with the Constitution;

(c) To demarcate constituencies in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution;

(d) To ascertain, publish and declare in writing under its seal the results of the elections and referenda;

(e) To compile, maintain, revise and update the voters’ register;

(f) To hear and determine election complaints arising before and during polling;

(g) To formulate and implement voter educational programmes relating to elections; and

(h) To perform such other functions as may be prescribed by Parliament by law;

 The Mission is to organize and conduct regular free and fair elections and referenda professionally, impartially, and efficiently”
