CAN AFRIGO BAND SURVIVE WITHOUT ITS ICON MOSES MATOVU?

The legendary saxophonist, vocalist, and bandleader affectionately known as Papa Moi tragically passed away on September 24, 2026, after suffering severe head injuries and blood loss from a violent assault in Kibuli, Kampala.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, the fatal altercation stemmed from a dispute involving a female companion, and authorities have launched a manhunt for the primary male suspect while holding the companion in custody.

Having marked 50 years in the music industry, Afrigo Band is Uganda’s longest-running and most influential live music group. Matovu co-founded the band in 1975 and was widely regarded as the glue that held it together across generations.

Because Matovu was the primary director and central figure guiding the group for five decades, local media, fans, and entertainment analysts are actively debating if the band can sustain its structure or if this immense loss will mark the end of an era.

For many fans, corporate sponsors, and booking agents, Moses Matovu was Afrigo Band. Replacing his commanding stage presence and distinctive saxophone riffs will be impossible.

The group commands an expansive discography of timeless classic hits spanning half a century. The brand value of their music ensures ongoing demand for live renditions of their catalog at corporate functions, cultural gatherings, and festivals.

While the initial shock has left the Ugandan music fraternity in mourning, the group’s corporate structure makes a permanent breakup unlikely. Instead, the surviving members are expected to regroup following the funeral to transition into a new chapter focused on preserving and touring Matovu’s massive musical heritage.

Matovu handled the complex day-to-day discipline, gig bookings, and musical direction. Without his authoritative final say, internal administrative friction or leadership disputes could emerge.

Ultimately, Afrigo Band is unlikely to vanish overnight. The immediate future will likely involve heavy tribute concerts and a push to honor Matovu’s lifetime legacy, keeping them in headlines. However, their long-term survival as a top-tier headlining act will depend on whether Joanita Kawalya and the remaining leadership can successfully institutionalize the band beyond the shadow of its fallen commander.

The  Minister of Gender Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde recognized the legendary musician and saxophonist as a monumental figure, while Afrigo Band was praised as a “national treasure whose music has united generations”.

Minister Tumukunde delivered an official speech honoring Matovu’s legacy. The veteran artist was a pillar of Uganda’s music industry for five decades.

Matovu was not just a performer; he was the primary composer, administrator, and the undisputed face of the band. He held the group cohesive through massive shifts in the Ugandan music landscape.

Local Government Minister and Events Promoter Balaam Byarugahare says Uganda’s music industry has lost a true legend whose contribution to our culture and music will remain unforgettable.

“He was a giant of our music industry, and a talent we may never replace. My heartfelt condolences go to Mzee Moses Matovu’s family, the entire Afrigo Band fraternity, his friends, colleagues, and all lovers of his music. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Rest well, Mzee Moses Matovu. Your music and legacy will live on,.”he stated.
