US EMBASSY LAUNCHES FREEDOM 250  CAMPAIGN

The U.S. Embassy in Uganda has officially launched the Freedom 250: The American Edge Campaign, marking the beginning of a year-long celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary and its enduring partnership with Uganda.

The launch event, held at the U.S. Ambassador’s residence, brought together government officials, business leaders, alumni of U.S. exchange programs, and media to introduce the “American Edge”— highlighting stories of the American competitive advantage that comes from U.S. innovation, technology, entrepreneurship, and cultural exchange and its impact on Ugandans.

Speaking at the event, the U.S. Ambassador William Popp emphasized that “When Ugandans partner with American businesses, study at U.S. universities, or collaborate with U.S. researchers, they gain world-class technology, transparent business practices, cutting-edge research, transformative education, and networks to compete globally.  That is what we are celebrating with Freedom250.”

”Over the past three years, I’ve traveled across Uganda—from Gulu to Mbarara, from Mbale to Kasese, from bustling Kampala to remote villages. Everywhere I’ve gone, I’ve seen The American Edge in action, the American advantage that impacts so many Ugandans. I’ve seen it in laboratories at Makerere and Mbarara Universities, where Ugandan researchers use American technology to unlock the genetic codes of diseases. I’ve seen it in the offices of entrepreneurs who studied in America and returned home to build businesses that create jobs and drive innovation. I’ve seen it in health clinics equipped with American diagnostic tools that detect tuberculosis and HIV faster and more accurately than ever before. I’ve seen it in the eyes of young Ugandans who dream of studying in the United States—and in the confidence of alumni who’ve already made that journey and brought their skills back home to change their communities. The American Edge is something thousands of Ugandans have chosen—because it works. Because it delivers results. Because it creates opportunity. So what exactly is The American Edge? It’s the competitive advantage that comes from 250 years of American innovation, entrepreneurship, and the relentless pursuit of excellence,” said Popp.

He explained that ”The American Edge isn’t just for Americans. When Ugandans partner with American businesses, study at U.S. universities, or collaborate with U.S. researchers, they gain world-class technology, transparent business practices, cutting-edge research, transformative education, and networks to compete globally.  That is what we are celebrating with Freedom250.”

Finally, Popp added that Freedom250 is not just about American history, ”but the principles that have made America stronger—freedom, innovation, entrepreneurship, and the belief that free people, working together, can accomplish extraordinary things.”

The American Edge campaign will include examples of how American innovation, investment, and exchange programs have contributed to economic growth, technological advancement, and skills development across Uganda.  The Freedom 250 campaign will run through the end of 2026 as part of media engagements, digital storytelling, and public events sharing stories of American innovation and excellence in Uganda.

William Popp to Exit Uganda

The United States Ambassador to Uganda, William Wayne Popp, is set to depart following the conclusion of his tour of duty later this month.

Popp has served as U.S. ambassador to Uganda since September 2023, when he succeeded Natalie E. Brown.

During his tenure, he oversaw a range of U.S.-funded initiatives, with a strong focus on public health, economic development, and governance. He supported the rollout of programmes under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a cornerstone of Uganda’s HIV/AIDS response, alongside broader efforts to strengthen the country’s health systems.

Popp also promoted trade and investment ties between Uganda and the United States, engaging government and private sector players to advance business partnerships, economic growth, and job creation. His tenure saw continued support for youth-focused programmes, particularly in entrepreneurship and digital skills development, aimed at expanding opportunities for young people.
