National Water and Sewerage Corporation has launched  11.4 billion project to upgrade  water supply network in Kanungu, District..

NWSC officials told this website that the 18-month project aims to expand service to 282,000 people, up from the current 216,893. The investment follows years of water rationing caused by a system that produces 1.5 million liters per day despite a demand for 3 million liters.

NWSC Managing Direcror Eng Silver Mugisha,  said the existing infrastructure was built two years ago by the Ministry of Water and Environment and is no longer sufficient.

The project scope includes the redevelopment of the Mpangango water source and the development of the Matanda source. Each facility is expected to provide 1 million liters per day.

Dr Mugisha said that Gets Technical Services Ltd. will lead the construction, which involves laying new pumping mains from the Mpangango source to the Katete reservoir and building a 200,000-liter reservoir in Kihihi. The work will span six town councils, including Kanungu, Kihihi, Kambuga, Butogota, Kanyantorogo and Nyamirama, as well as 10 subcounties.

Edward Mutabaazi, director of Gets Technical Services, said the company will complete the work within the contracted timeline.

The Kanungu upgrades are part of a broader national effort by the corporation to address urban water challenges. Similar initiatives are underway in Kampala, where a 100 million euro project is expected to help increase national production to 500 million liters per day.

National Water and Sewerage Corporation) strategic plan (2024-2027) aims to increase water access and customer base to over 1.1 million connections, improve service reliability, reduce Non-Revenue Water (NRW), boost financial growth (turnover, cost coverage), and expand infrastructure, aligning with national goals by focusing on industrialization, technology, and sustainability for universal service delivery in Uganda.

Key Focus Areas & Goals in the Strategic plan

  • Grow connections to 1.135 million by 2027 and serve more Ugandans, with targets extending to 2034.
  • Expand network length (e.g., to 23,142 km by 2027) and asset base, including major projects in Kampala and other towns to address constraints.
  •  Increase annual turnover (targeting UGX 867B by 2027) and improve budget cost coverage.
  • Reduce Non-Revenue Water (NRW) through anti-theft measures, meter accuracy, and addressing water availability issues.
  • Focus on environmental conservation, catchment management, and climate change mitigation.
  • Develop a skilled and productive workforce through training and development
