Kyegegwa, Uganda. As part of its unwavering commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment, MTN Uganda, under the auspices of the MTN Changemakers Initiative, proudly announces its latest endeavor – the construction of a borehole in Kyaka I, Kyaka I Kikuta village, Kyegegwa District.

This vital project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, aiming to ensure universal access to safe and clean water.

In a generous collaboration combining both resources and manpower, MTN Uganda, through the MTN Foundation, contributed construction materials valued at UGX 13 Million. Additionally, MTN staff actively participated in the borehole’s construction, demonstrating the company’s hands-on approach to community development.

This initiative is expected to significantly impact over 1,000 individuals in Kyaka II, providing reliable access to clean water for more than two decades.

This initiative represents a critical stride in addressing the pressing issue of water scarcity within the region and aligns with MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy. The strategy emphasises leveraging technology and promoting collaborative efforts to empower communities and stimulate economic growth across Uganda.

The inspiration for supporting this project stems from the impressive achievements of Souls Rescue Missions Uganda Ltd. Their “Safe Water for Safe Communities” initiative has successfully led to the establishment of over seven boreholes in the district, markedly improving community health and sanitation.

Abel Mwesigye, the Western Region Business Manager for MTN Uganda, said: “At MTN Uganda, we are driven by the belief that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern, connected life, including access to clean water. Our collaboration with Souls Rescue Missions Uganda Ltd and the community of Kyaka II is a testament to our commitment to not only address immediate needs but also to ensure a sustainable future for all.”

He further highlighted the project’s alignment with global objectives, stating, “This initiative is a significant step towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, focusing on the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. By providing access to safe water, we aim to improve health, hygiene, and contribute to the environmental and economic development of the Kyaka II community.”

Yonasi Muhumuza, the founder of Souls Rescue Missions Uganda Ltd, expressed his gratitude towards MTN Uganda for their substantial contribution towards improving water and sanitation within the community.

As part of the MTN Changemakers Initiative, the MTN Foundation has allocated UGX 500 million to support 25 selected projects across Uganda. These projects span various sectors including economic empowerment, education, health, water, sanitation, and hygiene, targeting a wide array of beneficiaries such as youth, women, persons with disabilities, and rural communities.

Among the notable beneficiaries of the initiative are Kalaa Mugosi Women Empowerment in Sironko, Rotaract Club of Masaka, Prime Time at Makerere University in Kampala, and Tusitukire Wamu Development Association in Wakiso District.

Over the last decade, the MTN Foundation has invested UGX 30 billion in over 250 projects. These initiatives have spanned education, health, youth empowerment, water, sanitation, hygiene, and humanitarian responses, significantly impacting communities across Uganda and reinforcing MTN’s role as a catalyst for positive change and development within the nation.
