Minister of Finance  Henry Musasizi, has commended Huawei Technologies Uganda for its continued contribution to the country’s digital transformation and  making digital access and services more affordable and contributing to Uganda’s digital transformation agenda in line with the Tenfold Growth Strategy.

Musasizi made the remarks while meeting Huawei Technologies (Uganda) team led by the Managing Director Zhang Hao (Edward) at the Finance Ministry.

Huawei is a global provider of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices and has been in Uganda for last 25 years.

The Minister said the ICT skills being imparted in the young people by Huawei should be advanced to enable them locally manufacture computers, phones and other ICT equipment in line with the goal of the anchor sector of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).

He thanked Huawei for the policy proposals to transform the sector and the corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities digitally changing the lives of ordinary Ugandans in line with the Tenfold Growth Strategy.

Zhang Hao and his team discussed with the Minister proposals to bring down the cost of digital services, including tax incentives and introduction of low-cost smart phones to increase the number of smart phone users from the current 46%.

During the high-level engagement at the Ministry of Finance  noted that access to affordable smart devices would help accelerate digital transformation, improve service delivery, and contribute to Uganda’s economic growth.

He further encouraged Huawei to continue strengthening ICT talent development so that the skills being transferred to young Ugandans can support the long-term development of the country’s Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) sector.

As Huawei marks 25 years of operations in Uganda, Minister Musasizi praised the company for supporting the Government’s Tenfold Growth Strategy through expanding digital connectivity, promoting ICT skills development among young people, and improving access to digital technologies across the country.

During the meeting, Huawei presented some policy proposals designed to accelerate digital inclusion, including measures to reduce the cost of smart devices through tax incentives and the wider availability of more affordable smartphones. The proposals aim to increase Uganda’s smartphone penetration beyond the current 46 percent, enabling more citizens to participate in the digital economy.

The meeting further reaffirmed the strong partnership between the Government of Uganda and Huawei in advancing digital inclusion, innovation, and sustainable economic development.

Huawei Technologies supports Uganda’s digitalisation through core ICT infrastructure, including the National Backbone Network, digital skills training, and policy talks on affordable smart devices. Operating in the country for 25 years, the tech giant collaborates closely with government ministries and local enterprises to expand digital inclusion
