DFCU-ROTARY HEALTH CAMP SCREENS 1,000+, UNCOVERS CHRONIC DISEASES

A vital community health outreach has uncovered critical, previously undiagnosed cases of hypertension and diabetes among Kamwokya residents, proving how community health camps act as a frontline defense against silent killers.

The massive health camp, held at the Kamwokya Seventh-day Adventist Church, drew 1,085 residents for free medical consultations, routine screenings, treatments, and specialist referrals. Medical experts noted that many beneficiaries had no idea they were living with chronic conditions until the routine checkups flagged dangerously elevated blood sugar and blood pressure levels.

“A healthy population underpins economic activity at every level,” emphasized dfcu Limited Chairman Jimmy Mugerwa. “Strong communities create the foundation for stronger households, stronger businesses, and a more resilient economy.”

Raymond Andrew Kalema of the Rotary Club of Kitante noted that Rotary has consistently run this camp for five years, observing an overwhelming year-on-year increase in demand as citizens look for alternative routes to bypass delayed or costly mainstream healthcare systems.

The outreach, hosted at the Kamwokya Seventh-day Adventist Church, highlighted the severe prevalence of undetected non-communicable diseases, identifying multiple cases of previously undiagnosed hypertension and diabetes among attendees.

The National Health Laboratory and Diagnostics Services team processed 1,838 diagnostic tests, including 478 sickle cell screenings, 357 HIV tests, 307 malaria tests, 245 syphilis tests, and 207 hepatitis B evaluations.

The health drive is part of dfcu Bank’s three-year, UGX 1 billion investment into community health infrastructure alongside Rotary Uganda. To date, the national initiative has served over 30,000 Ugandans and fully sponsored 22 pediatric heart surgeries for children from Western Uganda.

Speaking at the outreach, dfcu Limited Chairman Jimmy Mugerwa reinforced the link between corporate sustainability and public health. “A healthy population underpins economic activity at every level. It affects livelihoods, productivity, and the ability of families to plan for the future,” Mugerwa stated. “That is why interventions that expand access to screening, treatment, and healthcare information remain important.”

Helena Mayanja, Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at dfcu Bank, added that the partnership successfully leverages shared resources and community networks to connect vulnerable populations with appropriate secondary and tertiary referral systems.

Rotary Club of Kitante’s Raymond Andrew Kalema confirmed that the camp, now in its fifth consecutive year in Kamwokya, continues to see an exponential surge in localized demand, demonstrating the crucial role of mobile clinics in filling urban healthcare delivery gaps
