“Unheard” Uganda made movie has scooped three honours at the Bantu Film Festival in Gaborone, Botswana.
The film directed by Joseph Ken Ssebagala and produced by Polly Kamukama, won three top awards: Best Feature Film, Best Director, and Best Writer.
Unheard is one of the first beneficiaries of the Uganda Communications Commission’s (UCC) Content Development Support Programme (CDSP), a government initiative designed to support local filmmakers through funding and mentorship. The film’s success highlights the programme’s impact in helping Ugandan stories reach international audiences.
Set in South-Western Uganda, Unheard tells the story of a brave widow who challenges deep-rooted traditions to secure her family’s future and rightful inheritance. Its emotional storytelling and cultural depth have touched audiences across Africa, earning praise for its honest portrayal of women’s strength and resilience.
Producer Polly Kamukama attended the festival in Gaborone, joined by Uganda’s Honorary Consul to Botswana, Dr. Sebastian Okello-Wengi, and his wife, Caroline.
UCC says the film’s victory is proof that Ugandan creativity can thrive globally when given the right support. Through initiatives like the CDSP, more filmmakers are being empowered to tell original, authentic stories that reflect Uganda’s identity and experience.
Unheard is not just a film, it’s a statement of hope, showing how Ugandan voices, once overlooked, are now being celebrated on the continental stage.
Uganda Communication Commission supports the film industry through financial aid via programs like the Content Development Support Programme, providing training and scholarships, and marketing Uganda as a filming destination. It aims to increase local content production, create jobs, build skills, and promote Uganda’s culture and economy through the film sector
Ucc has provided funding for the production of various content, including feature films, TV dramas, and documentaries, to boost local production and create employment opportunities.
UCC has also provided sh 500 million to support filmmakers struggling with funding and organized the annual festival to showcase Ugandan talent, provide awards, and offer participants opportunities for international networking and exposure
