Church of Uganda has reiterated its commitment to promoting peace, justice, and reconciliation across Africa through faith-based approaches.

This was highlighted at the African Union Economic, Social and Cultural Council (AU-ECOSOCC) Citizens’ Forum 2025, currently underway in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

CHURH OF UGANDA OFFICIALS IN AMEETING

Representing Church of Uganda at the forum is Mr. Denis Ogwang, Program Officer for Gender and Social Justice, who is serving as a panelist in the session titled “Unlock Civil Society Potential in Africa Peacebuilding.”The Citizens’ Forum, convened under the theme “Reimagining Democracy and Advancing Reparative Justice: A New Social Contract,” has brought together diverse stakeholders to reflect on inclusive governance, justice, and civil society engagement across the continent.

During the session, Mr. Ogwang shared insights into the Church’s grassroots peacebuilding efforts, including gender justice advocacy, trauma healing, and community reconciliation. He emphasized the critical role that faith-based organizations play in advancing social cohesion and healing in post-conflict settings.

“The Church of Uganda has long believed that sustainable peace begins with justice and healing within our communities,” Ogwang said. “Faith-based organizations offer trusted, community-rooted platforms for promoting dignity, restoring relationships, and championing reparative justice.”

His presentation aligns with the broader mission of AU-ECOSOCC, which seeks to empower civil society to actively contribute to the African Union’s goals, including the promotion of democratic values, human rights, and participatory governance.

Mr. Ogwang also called on governments, civil society actors, and regional institutions to strengthen collaboration with religious institutions in building a resilient and peaceful Africa. He concluded by inviting all peace-loving individuals and organizations to work alongside the Church of Uganda in advancing reparative justice and fostering a new social contract grounded in equity and inclusion.

The AU-ECOSOCC Citizens’ Forum continues through the week with a series of high-level dialogues and engagements aimed at reimagining Africa’s democratic future.
