C-CARE  UGANDA SECURES COHSASA ACCREDITATION

C-Care IHK has secured its fourth consecutive accreditation from the Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa (COHSASA), attaining an outstanding 98% compliance score following a rigorous evaluation process earlier this year.

This new three-year certification reaffirms the hospital’s decade-long commitment to safe, evidence-based, and patient-centred care.

COHSASA is the only internationally accredited health facility accreditation body based in Africa. It works to improve healthcare systems by guiding institutions to meet internationally accepted standards through an external evaluation and quality improvement process. It is accredited by the ISQua External Evaluation Association (IEEA), which is considered the gold standard for global healthcare accreditation.

Since its first accreditation in 2015, C-Care IHK has grown into one of Uganda’s leading private healthcare providers. It is one of only four hospitals in East Africa to be accredited by COHSASA—a distinction that underlines its exceptional quality of care and operational excellence.

“Reaccreditation is a deeper test,” said Dr. Miriam Mutero, General Manager of C-Care IHK. “It doesn’t stop at asking whether you can be excellent, but whether you can sustain excellence. With this 98%, we have once again proven that quality-class healthcare delivery is a present-day reality here in Uganda.”

C-Care IHK, a 115-bed acute multispecialty hospital, is renowned for pioneering specialised services such as open-heart surgery, laparoscopic (keyhole) procedures, oncology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, and plastic surgery. It was the first private hospital in Uganda to successfully perform both open-heart and keyhole surgeries.

According to the latest COHSASA audit, the hospital earned perfect scores (100%) in several key departments including Laboratory Services, Access to Care and Patient Rights, Therapeutic Support Services, and Maintenance Services.

These exceptional scores placed C-Care IHK well above the global benchmark where hospitals scoring between 85% and 90% are considered excellent.

Beyond clinical metrics, accreditation has also strengthened the hospital’s operational efficiency and market credibility. “Accreditation is a win-win,” Dr. Mutero added.

“It enhances patient safety, improves documentation and staffing protocols, and reduces institutional risk—all while boosting our ability to attract high-value partnerships.”

Between 2020 and 2024, C-Care IHK recorded a 28% increase in corporate healthcare partnerships, with many citing COHSASA accreditation as a key factor in their selection.

The hospital credits its success to a deeply embedded culture of quality. “The COHSASA roadmap strengthens how we think, deliver, and lead,” said Jackie Nabukeera, Head of Safety, Health, Environment  and Quality. The framework is woven into managerial decisions, internal audits, and strategic planning—ensuring continuous improvement across every level.

C-Care IHK’s standards are not only recognised locally. Through COHSASA’s affiliation with ISQua (IEEA), the hospital is internationally validated for excellence in healthcare delivery.

An independent external assessment in March 2025 praised its mature clinical governance and robust quality assurance protocols.

“With every accreditation cycle, we set the bar higher,” said Sheila Aboth, Group Head of Brand and Patient Experience. “We do this not just for C-Care, but to prove to Ugandans that you don’t have to fly out for excellent care. The excellence you’re looking for is right here—homegrown, reliable, and always improving.”
