The Indian Association of Uganda has celebrated appointment of Sanjay Tanna, as Minister of Trade and Hon. Shyam Tanna Member of Parliament for Tororo Municipality to serve in Uganda government

This was at the recognition ceremony held in Kampala that brought together members of the Indian community, business leaders, and distinguished guests who applauded the two leaders for their significant contributions to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation and national development

Founded in 1922, the association has been a cornerstone of the Indian community in Uganda, fostering peace and promoting social cohesion.

Today, the Indian community, despite representing  less than 1% of the population, contributes up to 65% of Uganda’s tax revenue, highlighting its significant role in the country’s development.

Leaders of the Indian Association Uganda hailed both Tanna and Shyam as exemplary leaders whose achievements continue to inspire excellence, patriotism, and public service among Ugandans and members of the Indian diaspora.

Meanwhile, Shyam Tanna was equally recognized for his dedicated service as newly elected Member of Parliament for Tororo Municipality and for his tireless efforts in championing community development, youth empowerment, and effective representation of his constituents.

The association noted that the success of the two leaders reflects the positive impact of hard work, determination, and a shared commitment to national progress.

In his remarks  Sanjay Tanna reflected on his inspiring journey in public service, attributing his rise to national leadership to nearly three decades of close collaboration with the Government of Uganda, coupled with dedication, resilience, and hard work.

“I have been working closely with the Government of Uganda for nearly 30 years,” Tanna said, noting that persistence, commitment, and service to the country had been the driving forces behind his success.

He encouraged members of the Indian community to remain united, continue investing in Uganda, and actively participate in the country’s development efforts.

Tanna further urged the community to take advantage of the numerous opportunities created under the leadership of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, emphasizing that Uganda remains one of Africa’s most promising destinations for investment, trade, and industrial growth.

“The opportunities are enormous. We should continue working together, supporting one another, and contributing to the development of the country that has given us so much,” he remarked.

According to Tanna noted that the Asian community contribute an estimated 65 to 70 percent of Uganda’s tax revenues through investments and business enterprises especailly manufacturing, banking, real estate, hospitality, agriculture, wholesale trade, and industrial development.

He said over the decades, Indian-owned enterprises have created thousands of jobs for Ugandans, contributed significantly to industrialization, and supported the country’s economic transformation agenda. Their continued investments have helped position Uganda as a competitive destination for regional and international business.

Tanna commended the Indian community for its longstanding commitment to Uganda’s prosperity, describing it as a strategic partner in the nation’s development journey.

The recognition of Hons. Sanjay Tanna and Shyam Tanna stands as a testament to their distinguished leadership, remarkable achievements, and enduring contribution to Uganda’s progress, prosperity, and future development.
