In a strategic move aimed to remain beacon for relevant education, Victoria University has unveiled practical skills training programmes accredited by Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB).

According to the University management the new certificate courses come as a relief to learners who probably may have not secured direct entry into A’level or University due to their performance in the O’ and A’ Level exams, respectively.

According to Victoria University Vice Chancellor Prof Lawrence Muganga, the two-year academic programmes which are purely practical and skill-based will enable learners secure immediate employment but also offer a foundation for furthering education, including diploma and degree courses.

“We have identified a pressing issue: Many students’ futures are compromised by financial hurdles or an educational emphasis on grades over competencies at O & A level. Some students graduate from certain universities, with no skills to navigate the world of work. To address this, we are launching highly practical and hands-on UBTEB-accredited certificate programmes focused on skill development and practical knowledge,”Muganga said.

“These programmes not only prepare students for immediate employment but also offer pathways to further education, including diploma and degree courses. They are also ideal for graduates seeking to enhance their skill set,” he stressed.

The accredited UBTEB courses available on offer at VU include; Certificate in Hotel and Institutional Catering, Certificate in Clearing and Forwarding, Certificate in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Certificate in Journalism and Media Studies.

For Science and IT enthusiasts, the University is offering a Certificate in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering and Agriculture studies under the same arrangement, with practical skills guaranteed upon completion of the two-year programme.

Muganga however explained that by emphasizing hands-on training, Victoria University aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and the skills demanded by the job market, contributing significantly to reducing unemployment in our country.

Dr Lawrence Muganga has for long been a gem in transforming the country’s education sector with innovative strategies that have so far helped bridge the gap between the institutions and the job market.
