President Yoweri Museveni has announced that the government is drafting a new law aimed at resolving persistent land ownership disputes and ending the widespread evictions that have plagued the nation.

The president made the announcement while officiating at the 36th National Heroes’ Day celebrations in Kabula County, Lyantonde District.

This year’s commemoration was held at the Lyantonde Technical Grounds under the theme, “The legacy and ideals of our heroes: a memorable inspiration.”

Addressing the large crowd, President Museveni expressed his strong disapproval of the land evictions that have rendered many Ugandans homeless.

He noted that while the government has made progress in curbing fraudsters who falsely claim association with the Mengo establishment, a more permanent solution is required.

“I will be addressing the nation soon on the new guidelines being prepared by the government to eradicate the continuous conflicts between landowners and squatters,” President Museveni stated.

The event also brought to light the grievances of military veterans from the Greater Masaka region.

After hearing directly from veterans that they had not received their compensation packages, despite the government releasing Shs 218 billion, the President publicly questioned the Minister for Luwero Triangle Affairs.

He demanded an explanation for where the funds allocated for the veterans had gone if the intended recipients never received them.

While assuring the veterans that more support is on the way, President Museveni pledged to launch an investigation into the disappearance of the money.

Furthermore, the President addressed the rising issue of cattle theft in the Greater Masaka area.

He tasked the regional police leadership to intensify their operations based on the sub-county model to curb the crime wave.

He urged the Regional Police Commander to adopt unconventional methods to ensure the safety and security of residents and their property.

The Heroes’ Day celebrations concluded with a ceremony where the national awards committee recognized and presented medals to individuals for their distinguished contributions to nation-building.
