JINJA, UGANDA — Dignitaries, business pioneers, and religious leaders gathered at the Shree Hindu Sabha (SDM) Temple in Jinja on Saturday, October 17, 2026, to celebrate Navratri, highlighting the enduring bond and cultural unity between the Indian community and the Kingdom of Busoga.
The grand evening featured traditional rhythmic music, vibrant attire, and the high-energy Garba dance—a cultural tradition recognized on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Addressing the assembly, the Second Deputy Prime Minister of Obwa Kyabazinga Bwa Busoga, Owek. AlHaji Osman Ahmed Noor, delivered warm greetings on behalf of His Majesty Isebantu Kyabazinga William Wilberforce Kadhumbula Nadiope IV.

“Tonight, as we witness the Garba dance in honour of Shakti, the divine feminine, we are reminded that culture is what makes us human. Busoga Kingdom deeply respects all faiths and all cultures,” stated Owek. Osman.
Reflecting on over a century of shared heritage, Owek. Osman emphasized the Indian community’s contributions across key sectors, including manufacturing, trade, health, and education.
“The story of Jinja cannot be told without the story of the Indian community… You came as traders, but you stayed as our brothers, sisters, neighbours, and friends. You are part of Busoga.”
He further underscored the peaceful co-existence within the region through the Kingdom’s cultural value of Obuntubulamu (humanity toward others):
“In Jinja, a mosque, a temple, and a church can exist on the same street in peace. That is the Uganda we want, and that is the Busoga we are building. The Garba circle tonight—where everyone dances together in a circle—is a powerful symbol of unity, equality, and togetherness,” he said.
On behalf of Obwa Kyabazinga Bwa Busoga, Owek. Osman extended special appreciation to the Indian Community in Jinja for their unwavering support to the Busoga Kingdom.
“You have supported our cultural activities, our social programmes for the youth and the vulnerable, and you have always responded positively whenever the Kingdom has called upon you. This partnership is precious to us and we do not take it for granted,” Owek. Osman noted.
His Worship Abdulhafidh Nagaya, Mayor of Jinja City, extended heartfelt gratitude to the community for their investments and long-standing presence in the city.
“To the Indian community, Uganda is your home and Jinja is your bedroom,” said Mayor Nagaya. “We pray to God that we work together and we achieve the best for our country and our city together. Thanks for the investment in Jinja and the whole country at large.”

Mr. Yogendar Singh, Chargé d’Affaires at the High Commission of India in Kampala, commended the organizers for preserving their spiritual and cultural heritage abroad.
“Navratri is not merely a festival; it is a powerful reminder that goodness is stronger than evil, courage is better than fear, and faith gives us strength to overcome life’s challenges,” Singh noted. “The Indian community has contributed to the social, cultural, and economic life of Uganda over many generations. Celebrations such as this provide a valuable opportunity to preserve our heritage, strengthen community bonds, and deepen friendship.”
Piyush Kotecha, Vice Chairman of the SDM Temple Jinja and Chairman of the Indian Association (East and North Sector), likened Jinja’s role in unity to the region’s most famous natural landmark.
“Jinja holds a very special place in Uganda and across Africa. It is home to the source of the mighty River Nile,” Kotecha remarked. “Just as the River Nile unites communities through the gift of water, we must unite our communities through the gift of love, service, and togetherness.”
Prominent industrialist Mr. Mayur Madhvani, Joint Managing Director of the Madhvani Group, took the stage to express his appreciation for the organizers and volunteers behind the event.
“I want to thank the committee for the hard work they’ve done… and all the volunteers making sure that this function is a success. This function would have never been successful unless all of you were here,” Madhvani said.
The festival’s prominent guests also included Mr. Minesh Patel, Chairman of the SDM Temple Jinja; Mr. Paresh Mehta, Chairman of the Indian Association Uganda; Mr. Santosh Gumte, Managing Director of Kansai Plascon Uganda Limited; and Mr. Ranmal Keshwala, Managing Director of the Keshwala Group.
The official gathering concluded with a community group photograph on stage, followed by the serving of traditional Mahaprasad (blessed food) as the Ras Garba festivities continued into the night.
