FIFTY YEARS LATER,THE STORY IS STILL BEING WRITTEN

By Ambrose Dillan Masengere

Fifty years ago, someone had to believe that Public Relations in Uganda deserved a profession to call its own. There were no hashtags, LinkedIn communities or digital platforms on which practitioners could showcase their work. It was 1976, and what existed was an idea: that communication was important enough to be practised deliberately, ethically and professionally. From that conviction came the Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU). PRAU did not simply survive 50 years; it helped a profession grow up.

That story has always been about people. James Mutabaazi and the pioneers planted the seed in an extraordinarily different communications environment. Hope Kivengere helped professionalise government communication. Henry Rugamba carried the conversation about reputation into corporate leadership, while Goretti Masadde, PRAU’s first female president, represented another important shift in who could lead the profession. They were not simply occupying communications positions; they were giving an emerging profession credibility.

Today, their footprints lead to a much bigger room. Tina Wamala, Irene Nakasiita, Sarah Kagingo, Cynthia Mpanga, Helena Mayanja, Simon Peter Kasyate, Daudi Ochieng, Susan Nsibirwa and Allen Sempa, among many others, represent a generation that has taken communication into corporate leadership, agencies, public affairs, reputation management and the wider integrated communications industry. Their careers remind younger practitioners that PR is no longer somewhere at the end of the decision-making process. Increasingly, communicators are helping shape the decision itself.

And that is perhaps PRAU’s most human legacy. Somewhere along these 50 years, a young practitioner met someone who became a mentor. Someone received an introduction that changed a career. Someone watched a respected practitioner command a boardroom and thought, perhaps I can do that too. Someone’s work was recognised at the PRAU Excellence Awards and suddenly the long nights behind a campaign felt worthwhile. Professional associations are built through structures, but professions are ultimately built through people believing in other people.

That cycle continues through PRAU’s mentorship efforts, where emerging communicators are connected with practitioners who have already travelled parts of the road ahead. It is a simple idea with enormous consequences: experience should not disappear when one generation leaves the room. The lessons, mistakes, relationships and standards accumulated over decades must find their way to the next practitioner. That is how 50 years becomes more than age; it becomes institutional memory.

The profession being inherited, however, looks nothing like the one of 1976. A customer with a smartphone can create a reputational crisis before the communications team arrives at work. Employees are now storytellers. Communities can challenge institutional narratives publicly. A TikTok video can outrun a carefully approved statement in minutes. The audience did not simply become digital; the audience took the microphone. PR therefore cannot simply help organisations speak louder. We must help them listen better.

Our role has expanded with it. Today’s practitioner moves between reputation, sustainability, public affairs, stakeholder engagement, digital communities, employee experience, crisis management, data and business strategy. PRAU’s golden jubilee arrives at exactly the right moment to ask what kind of practitioner the next 50 years will require. The answer cannot simply be someone who communicates well. It must be someone who understands organisations, people and the consequences when the two stop understanding each other.

For years, we have demanded the proverbial seat at the table. Perhaps the next 50 years should be less about demanding the chair and more about proving what we bring when it is offered. Can we connect reputation to organisational performance? Can we hear stakeholder concerns before they become crises? Can we advise leadership that sometimes the answer is not another statement or campaign, but a change in behaviour? Strategic PR begins when communication stops merely explaining decisions and starts helping organisations make better ones.

We must also become less comfortable with impressive numbers that tell incomplete stories. Millions of impressions, hundreds of media mentions and trending hashtags look excellent in reports. But there is a question our profession must become brave enough to ask: “And then what?” Did trust improve? Did somebody act differently? Did a relationship become stronger? Did our counsel protect reputation? The next frontier of Ugandan PR cannot simply be more communication. It must be communication whose impact we can demonstrate.

Artificial intelligence now adds another chapter. AI can draft a press release, analyse information and generate content faster than most of us ever could. Yet a machine can generate words; it cannot carry our professional conscience. It cannot fully understand the cultural instinct that tells a Ugandan communicator why technically perfect words can still land terribly wrong. Technology will transform our tools, but judgement, ethics, empathy and an understanding of people must continue defining the practitioner behind them.

For young practitioners like me, PRAU at 50 feels less like an anniversary and more like an inheritance. We entered a profession whose foundations had already been fought for. We found practitioners to learn from, standards to aspire to, networks to enter and examples showing how far a communications career could travel. We inherited shoulders strong enough to stand on. The responsibility now is to make our own shoulders strong enough for somebody else.

So perhaps PRAU’s golden jubilee is really a baton changing hands. 1976 gave us a beginning. Fifty years of practitioners gave that beginning meaning. Now 2026 gives another generation responsibility. When PRAU turns 100, I hope those practitioners will look back and say we honoured the pioneers, embraced change, protected the integrity of the profession and left it stronger than we found it. Because the finest way to celebrate 50 years of those who shaped us is to become worthy examples for those who will come after us.
