The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), in collaboration with global initiatives, has launched Schools of Excellence program in Uganda to integrate elite football training with education.
The project partners with 11 specialized schools, providing coaching, equipment, and bursaries to nurture talent, with a structure designed to feed into the National Football Academy
FUFA President Moses Hassim Magogo hailed the newly launched Schools of Excellence programme as the realisation of a decade-long strategy to professionalise youth football development in Uganda.
Magogo explained that the programme is designed to align school football with national regulatory frameworks, with participating institutions set to be certified as Grade Three academies.
“Our strategy is that the Schools of Excellence will also receive certification as Grade Three academies. Under Ugandan law, to teach football, you must have that academy licence,”he noted.
According to Magogo,FUFA has signed Memorandums of Understanding with 11 schools across Uganda, focusing on 8 regions for boys and 4 regional pairings for girls whwre prominent institutions like Kibuli Secondary School, Jinja Senior Secondary School, St. Joseph’s College Layibi, and Amus College School are involved.
FUFA provides technical staff, training kits, and equipment (footballs), while schools offer education and facilities to foster both technical precision and character,
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) is the governing body of football in Uganda and organises and manages the men’s and women’s national football teams, and the top and second tiers of national football league-Uganda Premier League and FUFA Big League respectively.
Uganda football at the regional level is structured under the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) as the 3rd Division (Regional Leagues) and lower, managed by eight regional associations. These leagues, including Buganda, Kampala, Western, West Nile, Eastern, Northern, North East, and Kitara, serve as the primary pipeline for talent promotion to the FUFA Big League.
As of April 2026, Uganda maintains its position as the top-ranked football nation in the CECAFA region (East Africa) and is emerging as a competitive force in wider continental, qualifying for AFCON 2025 and competing for 2026 World Cup spots. Despite a slight dip in global rankings to 87th, the senior team shows a positive upward trajectory
