Hamson Obua the Government Chief Whip has conceded defeat in the Ajuri County parliamentary race following a partial re-run ordered by court.
Denis Hamson Obua born 6 February 1980, is a Ugandan politician, who serves as the Minister of State for Sports, in the Cabinet of Uganda, effective 14 December 2019. He also concurrently serves as the incumbent Member of Parliament representing Ajuri County, Alebtong District, in the 10th Ugandan Parliament (2016 to 2021) and he retained his place in 11th Parliament (2021 to 2026).
Obua, Member of Parliament for Ajuri County in Alebtong District, accepted the outcome of the re-run held at 18 polling stations where Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) candidate Fred Jalameso secured 16,336 votes, against Obua 15,568 votest.

The partial re-run followed a successful election petition filed by Jalameso, who challenged the initial results over discrepancies at 18 polling stations. Court subsequently ordered a re-run in those areas, which confirmed Jalameso’s victory.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Obua said he had accepted the declared results and thanked the people of Ajuri County for the opportunity to serve them over the years.
“I have served the people of Ajuri County and made my contribution to the best of my abilities. I wish to congratulate and wish the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ajuri County good luck in service,” Obua said.
He added that, although he will be out of elective politics for the next five years, he remains committed to serving his people, Northern Uganda, the Lango sub-region and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Obua currently serves as the NRM Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda
At 45 years in 2025,the Uganda’s Government Chief Whip is providentially the youngest Cabinet Minister in President Museveni’s current Cabinet(2021-2026).

Obua boasts of an industrious and progressive leadership credential and trajectory having served as the National Students’ leader(UNSA),National Youth Council leader,Youth MP-Northern Uganda,Commissioner of Parliament, Chairperson of Science and Technology Committee of Parliament, Spokesperson Commonwealth Youth Forum,Secretary Publicity-NRM Parliamentary Caucus,MP Ajuri County,Minister of State for Education and Sports(Sports),Chairperson NRM Parliamentary Caucus and now Government Chief Whip and recently elected NRM Vice Chairperson-Northern Uganda at the Kololo NRM National Delegates Conference.
Obua was voted and ranked by African Leadership Institute(AFLI) as the best performing Member of Parliament in 2010 at 100% rating among others.

Obua, was born on February 6th 1980 in Amindit village, Awori Parish, Abako Sub County, Ajuri County, Alebtong District in Northern Uganda.
Alebtong is the home of great names like John Akiibua, first Olympic Gold Medalist and Field Marshal John Okello, the Zanzibar conqueror
Education Career
Obua started his primary education at Apami Primary School,later Adyeda Primary School and sat for his primary living examination in Inomo Primary School in 1993 and headed to Lango College-Lira where he completed O and A levels in 1997 and 1999 respectively.
Obua is a Golden Jubilee gradute of Uganda Management Institute with Masters in Public Administration in addition to other qualifications such as Diploma in Law(Law Development Centre),Certificate in Administrative Law(Law Development Centre) and Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and Social Administration(Uganda Christian University Mukono).
In 2004 and 2005, while visiting Lango, the President and the then Vice President spotted an eloquent Denis Hamson Obua, who presented the Youth memos to both Principals.
Obua was given a job at State House. Obua reported to Kampala and was made the Assistant Private Secretary and shortly Senior Clerk (Legal Duties) under Programme two then(State House).
In 2006 the Youth of Northern Uganda entrusted their votes to Obua as the Youth Member of Parliament.
Only three years into his term, MPs from across the country elected Obua as the Commissioner of Parliament. He made history as the youngest Commissioner at 29 years.
In 2011 his home people of the then newly created Ajuri County elected Obua as their MP and he has served in total four uninterrupted terms making history as the youngest member of NRM to have won four consecutive general elections.
As Chairperson,Committe of Science and Technology, Obua is among the brains behind the creation of Ministry of Science and Technology.
More importantly in 2007 when Uganda hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting,Obua was identified and chosen by the entire Commonwealth Youth Forum fraternity as a Member of the International Planning Committee where he got the rare opportunity to have dinner with her Majesty the Queen of England at the Buckingham palace.
2010, a survey by the African Leadership Institute declared Obua as the best performing MP in the plenary with 100% rating.
Obua comes from the sports family and the celebrated clan of Atek-Okwerowe that has produced the likes of late John Akii Bua, late Denis Obua and former Cranes striker David Obua.
While serving as Minister of State for Sports,he earned the nick name “Golden Minister” because of Uganda’s best historical performance at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Obua, the Government Chief Whip was voted recently(September 2025)by the National Resistance Movement delegates at Kololo Independence Ground as the NRM Regional Vice Chairperson-Northern Uganda.
