Kampala Capital City Authority has started the Shs19.2 billion rehabilitation of Kinawataka Road in Nakawa Division, with the project expected to improve transport, drainage and connectivity between Kampala, Wakiso and the Jinja corridor.
The 2.32-kilometre road will be reconstructed with drainage channels, with the works handed over to RAM Contractors for implementation.
KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki said the project is being funded by the Government of Uganda and is expected to be completed by December 31.
“The road is 2.32 kilometres and is expected to be completed by 31st December. The rehabilitation will also include the construction of drainage channels to improve the road and its durability,” she said.
Buzeki said the rehabilitation is also part of Kampala’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.
“This rehabilitation is funded by the Government of Uganda at a cost of 19.2 billion shillings. As we prepare for AFCON 2027, we want to ensure that the infrastructure is delivered to the required standards,” she said.
She urged the contractor to adhere to the approved designs and called on residents to report any concerns that may arise during construction.
“Every design that has been approved must be implemented as it was designed. We also appeal to residents to report anything that is not going on well so that we can ensure quality,” Buzeki said.
Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo urged the contractor to prioritise quality and durability, warning against poor workmanship that could lead to the road deteriorating shortly after completion.
“We urge the contractors to rehabilitate this road with quality measures so that it does not get destroyed within the shortest possible time. Nakawa is an important link to other roads connecting Wakiso and Jinja,” Balimwezo said.
Minister for Kampala Minsa Kabanda also urged the contractor to employ residents living around the project area so that they can benefit from the rehabilitation works.
“We urge the contractor to employ residents from this area so that the people who live here can also benefit from the project,” Kabanda said.
The rehabilitation of Kinawataka Road is expected to improve traffic movement, drainage and connectivity in Nakawa Division while supporting Kampala’s preparations for AFCON 2027.
