After failing to retain his Mayoral Post in the January 2026 general elections to Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga, Erias Lukwago has officially returned to full-time legal practice, resuming his role as Managing Partner at Lukwago & Co. Advocates after two decades.
Lukwago formally handed over office on May 11 to his successor, Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga, ending a 15-year tenure as Kampala Lord Mayor that began in 2011
Lukwago first entered Parliament in 2006 under Democratic Party ticket and served on the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee as well as the Local Government Accounts Committee, establishing himself as a vocal opposition legislator and constitutional lawyer.
In 2011, he was elected the first executive Lord Mayor of Kampala under the newly created Kampala Capital City Authority structure.
His tenure was marked by frequent legal and political battles with the central government, strong advocacy for market vendors and urban poor communities, and outspoken criticism of government policies.
Lukwago is now focusing on constitutional law, human rights advocacy and legal practice, while maintaining interest in national affairs through public commentary.
Career
He was born in Kabungo Village, in present-day kalungu District on 11 May 1970, to Muhhamoud Mirundi and Salmati Nakayaga.Lukwago attended Makerere University between 1995 until 1997, graduating with a Bachelors degree and Diploma in legal practice from Low Development Centre in 1998.
Erias Lukwago is married to Zawedde Lubwama Lukwago and they have six children including twins. He has in the past been a member of the Democratic Party in Uganda, although in the 2011 elections he ran as an independent. On 28 July 2020, he officially joined the Forum of Democratic Change(FDC) political party then moved on to create People’s Front for Freedom.
It is a registered political party in Uganda as of June 2025, often associated with opposition figures like Dr. Kizza Besigye and Erias Lukwago. The party is headquartered on Katonga Road in Kampala. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
