The Electoral Commission has concluded nominations for special interest groups that includes youth, persons with disabilities, and older persons.

The Electoral Commission kicked off nominations on June2.

“Today is the last day for nomination of all those who want to contest, participate, and offer themselves to lead and be part of village committees for youth, for persons with disabilities, and for older persons,” Mucunguzi said.

According to Mucunguzi to participate in the village committee elections, youth must be between 18 and 30 years old, while older persons must be 60 years and above. Persons with disabilities must meet specific criteria outlined in the law.

Mucunguzi emphasized the importance of participating in the electoral process, stating, “Your vote is your voice.” The special interest group elections are critical, as they mark the beginning of the 2025-2026 general elections roadmap.

After the nominations, the campaign period will run from June 12 to June 14, followed by the elections on June 16, 17, and 19 for older persons, persons with disabilities, and youth, respectively.

In the same spirit Electoral Commission (EC) closed the nationwide display of the voters’ register, marking the end of a crucial exercise aimed at ensuring accuracy and transparency ahead of the upcoming general elections.

Justice Simon Byabakama, the EC chairperson, emphasized the importance of public participation in cleaning up the register.

“We urge all eligible voters to confirm their details before the exercise closes,” he said during the launch last month. “This is your opportunity to ensure your right to vote is secured.”

From May 16 to May 26, lists of proposed changes were displayed at parish or ward headquarters for public scrutiny. Citizens dissatisfied with any deletions can file appeals before local tribunals, composed of elders appointed by magistrates.

The EC has clarified that no new registrations or transfers were permitted during the display period. Display officers were stationed at polling stations to assist voters, particularly those encountering difficulties.

Justice Byabakama reminded the public that an accurate register is key to a credible election. “If you notice irregularities, report them.
