The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Board has toured key water supply infrastructure projects in Hoima City to assess ongoing works aimed at boosting water service delivery ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The tour centered on the Hoima Emergency Water Supply Project, which features a 2,000m³/day Water Treatment Plant, reservoir facilities, and pipelines designed to increase production, storage, and distribution capacity across the city.
The Board’s tour comes as NWSC continues implementing interventions under the AFCON water supply programme, including the completed water supply stabilization to the Hoima City Stadium. The Hoima stadium water extension project, involved the development and connection of two boreholes: Mparo, with a production capacity of 25 cubic metres per hour, and Kyarwiru, with a capacity of 15 cubic metres per hour.
Both boreholes were developed, connected to the stadium and commissioned, providing a reliable water source to support the Stadium as preparations for AFCON 2027 progress.
The key highlight of the tour was the Hoima Emergency Water Supply Project, which is designed to increase water production capacity and improve the reliability of supply across the city. The Project entails the construction of an Intake on River Kafu, Water Treatment Plant at Rwoga with a capacity of 2,000 cubic metres per day, a 2.9-kilometre raw water pipeline and a 300 cubic metre storage and balancing reservoir, and 22 kilometre treated water pipeline from Kikuube to Hoima City.
Overall implementation of the Hoima Emergency Water Supply Project has reached 37%, and will be ready for commissioning by February 2027.
Key Infrastructure Milestones at Hoima City Stadium Connected Water supply stabilization is already complete. NWSC developed, connected, and commissioned two boreholes—Mparo (25 m³/hour capacity) and Kyarwiru (15 m³/hour capacity)—to provide a reliable water source for the stadium.
Currently at 37% overall implementation and on track for commissioning by February 2027. This project includes a River Kafu intake, a treatment plant at Rwoga, a 2.9km raw water pipeline, a 300m³ storage reservoir, and a 22km treated water pipeline from Kikuube to Hoima City.
Excavation and concrete blinding for the treatment plant units are complete, intake excavation is at 90%, power extension works have reached 50%, and steel reinforcement/concrete works are at 15%.
The Board’s assessment also looked ahead to extending water supply services to Kabalega International Airport to support the influx of activity during AFCON 2027.
The proposed airport extension will involveUpgrading the Kafu Water Treatment Plant capacity from 2,000 to 3,000m³ per day,Laying a 36-kilometer bulk transfer pipeline and Constructing a 200m³ storage reservoir directly at the airport.
These interventions are part of NWSC’s broader strategy to reinforce infrastructure in Hoima, ensuring host venues and essential transit facilities are fully prepared for the continental tournament.
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation) has requested a total of Shs 15.9 billion from President Yoweri Museveni and the AFCON Secretariat to address its remaining funding gap.
This outstanding amount is needed to unlock stalled components and finance upcoming phases, including the kabalega In Intyernational Airport extension, Masindi town upgrades, and Component B of the Hoima project.
