The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has officially inaugurated its Qatar Chapter during a launch event at the Wyndham Doha West Bay.
The gathering brought together Ugandan community members, diplomats, and Regional Coordinators to establish a formal operational structure for PLU in the Gulf region.
PLU Deputy Commissioner for External Affairs Ronnie Kananura challenged the Ugandan diaspora to look beyond routine remittances and actively use their collective strength, skills, and strategic position in the Gulf to shape Uganda’s civic and socio-economic trajectory.
According to the Bank of Uganda’s latest data, remittance inflows reached US$2.5 billion in 2025, equivalent to approximately 3.8 per cent of GDP, supporting household livelihoods across the country.
He emphasised that Ugandans living abroad are essential participants in national development rather than distant observers.
Local leadership was entrusted to the newly appointed PLU Qatar Chairperson, Benson Akampumuza, whose team was recognised for organising the mobilisation drive across the local Ugandan workforce.
In their addresses, the leaders credited PLU Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for providing the organisational framework to engage the diaspora, as well as Secretary General Hon. Twalla Fadil for spearheading PLU’s administrative rollout across international branches.
The establishment of the Doha chapter gives PLU an organised platform in the Gulf region to drive civic engagement, protect worker welfare, and coordinate diaspora support.
The event was attended by H.E. Dr. Mohammed Kezaala, Deputy Ambassador, who represented the Uganda Embassy in Doha and pledged state support for diaspora initiatives.
UK PLU Chairman Ismail Wandera was also present, signalling PLU’s effort to coordinate its growing international network across Europe and the Middle East.
