Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC) has secured the ISO 9001:2015 certification, positioning the government-owned publisher to expand its competitiveness in Uganda and regional printing and publishing markets.
The certification, which recognises UPPC’s compliance with internationally accepted quality management standards, is expected to strengthen confidence in its products and services as the Corporation seeks to modernise its operations and attract more public and private-sector business.
UPPC Managing Director Prof. Sudi Nangoli said the certification marks an important step in the Corporation’s efforts to build an institution capable of competing beyond Uganda’s borders.
“This certification demonstrates that UPPC is operating in accordance to internationally recognised quality standards. It strengthens confidence in our services and positions us to compete more effectively for opportunities both at home and in the international market,” Nangoli said.
ISO 9001:2015 focuses on quality management systems, including consistent service delivery, accountability, efficient processes and continuous improvement.
For UPPC, the certification comes as the Corporation seeks to strengthen its dual role as Uganda’s official Government publisher and a commercial printing and publishing institution.
The Corporation publishes and disseminates official Government information, including the Uganda Gazette, laws and legislation, while also providing printing and publishing services to public and private-sector clients.
UPPC Director of Business Development Rebecca Nyakairu said the certification was the result of deliberate efforts to improve the Corporation’s internal systems and make quality a central part of its service delivery.
“ISO certification is ultimately about the customer. We have strengthened our processes to deliver greater consistency, efficiency and accountability, while creating a culture of continuous improvement across UPPC,” Nyakairu said.
The certification is expected to support UPPC’s ongoing efforts to modernise its operations, improve customer experience and position itself for increased business within Uganda and international markets.
UPPC is a public enterprise that is fully owned by Government. It was established in 1992 by the UPPC Act, Cap 215 . Section 2(2) of the UPPC Act provides that the Corporation shall be a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal and may sue or be sued in its corporate name.
The Corporation started out as the Government Printer under the British Colonial Government in 1902. In 1962 the Department remained under Office of the President. During that time, it was funded using public funds allocated under the Government Printer Vote and its role was to supply stationery and provide printing and publishing facilities to all Government Ministries and Departments.
Due to the important role played by the Corporation in the printing of all Bills, Statutes and Official Gazette, Cabinet classified it under Class I among those public bodies that Government has to retain full ownership
