The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced the immediate suspension of all ongoing defence and military cooperation activities with the Federal Republic of Germany.
According to a statement issued by the UPDF,the drastic measure comes in response to serious allegations concerning the conduct of the current German Ambassador to Uganda.
“The decision was prompted by credible intelligence reports indicating that His Excellency Mathias Schauer, the German Ambassador, is allegedly actively engaged in subversive activities in the country,” the statement read in part
Colonel Chris Magenzi, the Acting Director Defence Public Information for the UPDF made the communication through his X account (formerly twitter) on May 25 ,2025.
” The suspension will remain in effect until the full resolution of the matter of the Ambassador’s involvement with hostile pseudo political-military forces operating in the country against the Ugandan government,”Col Magenzi stated.
Additionally the suspension halts all collaborative defence activities between the two nations pending further clarification and resolution of the serious accusations.
This follows another official statement released on Friday May 23 2025 by the UPDF that revealed that foreign missions namely the German ambassador Schauer was actively involved in subversive activities in the country.
Uganda has its troops in the African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia, AUSSOM, which is partly funded by the European Union, of which Germany is a member.
In a post on the X platform on Sunday, Uganda’s military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba said the military was having problems with Schauer as a person.
“It has to do with him as a person. He is wholly unqualified to be in Uganda. It has nothing to do with the great German people,” said Kainerugaba.
Kainerugaba, this month warned the EU was “playing with fire” after a group of EU ambassadors met officials from Uganda’s largest opposition party including its leader, pop star-turned-politician, Bobi Wine.
