Righteous Ariho Besigye, the only grandson of prominent veteran opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye, has passed away at the age of six.
Ariho died in the early hours of Thursday morning while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
The tragic news was announced by his father, Adam Ampa Besigye, who shared a deeply moving tribute on social media. Ariho was Adam’s firstborn child, born in March 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s with profound pain and a heavy heart I’ve never imagined I would ever carry, that I announce the loss of my beloved and only firstborn son,” Adam wrote, describing his late son as the “greatest gift” of his life.
While the family has not disclosed the specific illness Ariho was battling or the duration of his hospitalization, Adam praised his son’s resilience during his final moments: “You fought until the end, my warrior. Daddy loves you always Rai. Until we meet again.”
The devastating loss comes at an exceptionally difficult time for the family. The boy’s grandfather, former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye, remains in state custody as he faces ongoing treason charges.
Funeral and burial arrangements are yet to be officially communicated by the family.
Dr. Warren Kizza Besigye Kifefe is Uganda’s most prominent veteran opposition leader, a physician, and a former military officer who has spent over two decades challenging the presidency of Yoweri Museveni.
He born on April 22, 1956 in Rukungiri District, Southwestern Uganda.After graduating with a medical degree from Makerere University in 1980, Besigye joined the National Resistance Army (NRA) guerrilla war led by Yoweri Museveni. He served as Museveni’s personal physician and a senior military medic, treating wounded combatants in the bush.When Museveni seized power in 1986, Besigye was appointed to high-ranking positions, including Minister of State for Internal Affairs and National Political Commissar. However, by 1999, Besigye publicly broke away from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). He authored a critical document accusing the government of breeding corruption, losing its democratic vision, and transitioning into a dictatorship.
Besigye became the primary political challenger to Museveni, contesting and losing four heavily disputed presidential elections in 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016. The Ugandan Supreme Court explicitly noted massive vote-rigging and irregularities in the 2006 election, though it fell short of nullifying the outcome.
