Kampala International University (KIU) emerged as the overall champion at the inaugural Inter-University Surgical Skills Competition, held at Makerere University ground.
Organized by the Uganda University Surgical Societies Consortium (UUSSC) under the theme “Fostering Surgical Excellence through Unity, Knowledge, and Skills,” the event brought together premier medical institutions from across the country to test their clinical acumen and technical precision.
The rigorous competition featured hands-on surgical skills assessments, intensive medical quizzes, and dynamic surprise challenges designed to evaluate teamwork and decision-making under pressure. KIU dominated the field, securing the top spot with a commanding lead.

The winning KIU delegation was led by Modestus Faith Akello, President of the KIU Surgery Society (KIUSS). Joining her on the triumphant team were Melissa Lynette Takuwa, Caroline Amaguru, Lily Rhoda Auma, Farhat Tinka, and Morris Muchangi Karimi.
In addition to the team trophy, KIU celebrated an outstanding individual milestone: Morris Muchangi Karimi was named the Best Overall Participant of the competition, cementing the university’s dominant performance.
Beyond the trophies, the UUSSC competition served as a vital collaborative platform, allowing future physicians to bridge the gap between classroom theory and practical, high-stakes application. The event underscored the growing impact of student-led surgical societies in shaping the next generation of Ugandan medical professionals through collaborative learning and elite skill development.
