Airtel Africa and Starlink have officially launched their commercial satellite-to-mobile service in Uganda. This milestone makes Uganda the second African nation to deploy the technology, following a successful rollout in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The cutting-edge service allows Airtel Uganda subscribers with compatible smartphones to maintain connectivity in remote locations entirely bypassing traditional, terrestrial mobile network limitations. The only requirement for users is a clear, unobstructed view of the sky.
Zero Special Equipment: Customers do not need specialized hardware, satellite dishes, or secondary devices.
Light-Data App Support: Powered by Starlink’s direct-to-cell constellation of 650 satellites, the network supports essential communication like SMS and light-data applications, including WhatsApp messaging.
Target Audience: The service provides a critical lifeline for sectors operating outside conventional coverage zones, such as transport, logistics, mining, farming, healthcare, and humanitarian organizations.
Emergency Preparedness: It serves as a vital communications backup during natural disasters, infrastructure failures, or temporary terrestrial network disruptions.
To celebrate the launch, eligible subscribers can register via the My Airtel App to enjoy a free 30-day introductory trial. Once the promotional period concludes, access to the Starlink Mobile service will be integrated into eligible Airtel Uganda data bundles.
The rollout marks the fruition of a strategic partnership first forged betweenAirtel Africa and Starlink in December 2025, which underwent comprehensive technical testing earlier this year. The telecommunications group intends to progressively scale the technology across its broader African footprint, subject to local regulatory frameworks.
“We are pleased to bring Starlink Mobile to Uganda, building on our momentum from the DRC,” said Sunil Taldar, CEO of Airtel Africa. “Our ambition is to complement our terrestrial networks with satellite technology so our customers stay connected wherever they live, work, or travel. We highly appreciate the Government of Uganda’s support in ensuring a seamless deployment.”Soumendra Sahu, Managing Director of Airtel Uganda, added:
“This partnership is transforming how connectivity is delivered across the country. Starlink’s advanced satellite technology perfectly complements our ongoing infrastructure investments. We extend our gratitude to the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance alongside the Uganda Communications Commission for fostering an environment that champions innovation.”
Representing the regulatory landscape, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba, congratulated the joint venture:
“The government remains committed to building an enabling policy environment that drives private sector growth in ICT. Starlink Mobile’s technology will significantly boost economic productivity and nationwide integration. I congratulate Airtel and Starlink on this milestone—keep challenging yourselves.”
