As the cost of living continues to pressure domestic budgets, everyday families and households across Uganda can now drastically lower their monthly cooking expenses without paying high installation fees upfront.
Pride Bank and Mogas Uganda have launched a green asset financing scheme designed to help families switch from expensive charcoal to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cooking systems. Under this new partnership,
Pride Bank will provide 100% upfront financing for domestic and institutional LPG setups, completely removing the initial cash barrier for families wanting to transition to clean energy.
While the project was officially unveiled at Vienna College Namugongo—where the school’s kitchen facility recorded a massive 40% drop in cooking costs after swapping solid biomass for MOGAS LPG—the financial benefits translate directly to domestic households.
For the average Ugandan home, cooking with charcoal has become increasingly expensive due to rising depletion of forest cover and fluctuating market prices.
The Pride Bank-MOGAS initiative directly addresses this by allowing families to spread the cost of modern gas equipment over manageable monthly micro-payments, mirroring the immediate savings they see on fuel.
According to Joseph Lwanga Mugerwa, the Manager of Agribusiness and Green Financing at Pride Bank, financial constraints are the main reason most families stay trapped using charcoal.
“The upfront capital needed to buy proper cylinders, high-efficiency burners, and safety equipment has historically kept clean cooking out of reach for many homes,” Mugerwa explained. “By financing 100% of the initial cost, Pride Bank allows families to instantly switch to a cleaner, faster, and cheaper system while managing their daily household cash flow safely.”
Beyond direct financial savings, the household shift to LPG offers massive health and operational advantages for families:
