Former Minister Mary Karoro Okurut, has died at the age 70 years. She served as the Cabinet Minister in Charge of General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister and previously held the Cabinet Minister portfolios for National Security and for Gender and Social Issues. She was also the elected Member of Parliament for the Bushenyi District Women’s Constituency. Born on December 8th 1954 in Bushenyi District, Okurut was a distinguished literary figure before her political career. She founded the Uganda Women Writers Association [FEMRITE]. A Ugandan national, Michael Katungi Mpeirwe, has been indicted in the U.S. for conspiring to supply military-grade weapons to Mexican drug cartels. According to the U.S. Justice Department, Katungi—a Ugandan government policy advisor with ties to security operations in Africa—allegedly collaborated with a Bulgarian arms trafficker and other foreign nationals in the illegal weapons scheme. Katungi previously served as Deputy Head of Mission for the Uganda High Commission and as a security logistics officer with the African Union Commission. The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has advised the people of Buganda to be cautious when voting for non-Baganda candidates contesting in the region. Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, held high-level discussions with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir at State House in Juba on Saturday afternoon, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and regional stability.
