VICTORIA UNIVERSITY TO UNVEIL AI FREE COURSE TARGETING 10,000 STUDENTS

Led by a mission to teach relevant courses that impact society,Victoria University Kampala is set to launch free Artificial Intelligence (AI) training programmes targeting 10,000 learners in its first cohort this end of May.

The university confirmed that the free AI classes will officially commence on May 25, 2026, with applications open to students in Uganda, across Africa, and globally through online format with flexible learning schedules.

The initiative comes at a time when AI and automation are rapidly reshaping global job markets, with industries increasingly prioritising practical digital skills over traditional academic qualifications.

Victoria University  Vice Chancellor Prof Lawrance Muganda says the programme is designed to equip learners with real-world competencies in AI, data, and digital technologies, areas now driving the fastest-growing careers globally.

The training aims to address a long-standing gap in traditional education systems, which have often emphasised theoretical knowledge and examinations over hands-on skills and employability.

Muganga emphasized that AI programme will prepare participants to adapt to these changes by providing future-ready skills applicable across multiple sectors.

“In today’s rapidly changing world, the traditional education model is crumbling. If we fail to integrate AI into our learning systems, we risk graduating students unprepared for modern realities. Education must evolve to equip learners with both advanced skills and values that guide them to thrive with purpose.” — Prof. Lawrence Muganga stated.

“The future lies in AI. It doesn’t matter which sector you’re in. AI is already replacing tasks that once required degrees, years of experience, and entire departments. The real danger is not AI taking your job. The danger is someone who understands AI taking your place. Adapt, upskill, or be left behind. The choice is no longer optional,”he stressed.

According to the Muganga, the fully online structure of the programme is expected to widen access to learners who may not be able to attend physical classes, particularly those outside Kampala or Uganda.

“Participants will be able to study from anywhere in the world, positioning the initiative as both a national and international education offering,”he stated.

Global trends indicate that up to 40% of jobs are being redefined by automation and artificial intelligence, while employers are increasingly shifting toward skills-based hiring models.

Established in 2011 and located on Jinja Road in Kampala, Victoria University (VU) Uganda is a premier private chartered university known for its commitment to experiential learning, technology integration, and AI-driven education. It is part of the Ruparelia Group, offering flexible undergraduate and postgraduate programs designed for workforce readiness, often boasting high employment rates for graduates.

VU emphasizes work-integrated learning, aiming to bridge the gap between education and employment, with 97% of employers reporting satisfaction with graduates’ readiness.

The university offers courses under several faculties: Health Sciences, Business & Management, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Science & Technology.

VU also features modern facilities including a, state-of-the-art simulation center for health science students, AI labs, and modern computer labs.
