Singer Zafaran, born Josephine Nakyoonyi, has parted ways with Swangz Avenue, ending her four-year association with the Ugandan record label.
The singer joined the label in 2022 with expectations of advancing her music career under one of East Africa’s most established entertainment companies. During her time there, she released a number of tracks, including Mwoto, Ankuba, Jeguli, Enafuya, Nakawere, and Otulo, among others.
Despite the releases, her progress under the label did not fully meet expectations on either side, leading to growing speculation among fans about her future with Swangz Avenue.
After discussions between both parties, a mutual decision was reached to end the professional relationship. Zafaran has now officially confirmed that she is no longer signed to the label.
In her statement, she thanked Swangz Avenue for the support, guidance, and opportunities she received during her time there.
She stressed that the split was amicable and based on mutual respect, adding that she is now focused on the next phase of her career.
“As I move forward independently, I am excited about the opportunities ahead and remain committed to creating authentic music and connecting with my supporters in meaningful ways. The best is yet to come, and I look forward to sharing this next phase of my journey with you. With gratitude,” she said.
She backed up King Saha and Chameleone recently at the Swangz Avenue produced Conver Sessions.
As much as details about Zafaran are still scanty, one thing fans come watch out for is her bubbly sense of style that she exudes as a backup vocalist on Tusker Malt Conver sessions in which she impresses with color-blocking and a dash of well-tailored suits.
Born Josephine Nakyoonyi, Zafaran is a prominent and promising artist in the Ugandan music industry. She is mentored by the major Kampala-based record label, Swangz Avenue. Known for her rich vocals, she has released hit Afrobeat and R&B tracks like “Sweetheart” and “Mwoto”
Before becoming a solo artist singer Zafaran was a journalism student at Makerere University Business School (MUBS). She left her studies due to financial constraints and pursued a career as a live band singer and backup vocalist
She sang with several Ugandan live music bands, including UB 5, Gin Afric, Nilers, Bahati Music, and the A Ka Dope band.
She also provided backup vocals for established stars such as Jose Chameleon , King Saha, John Blaq, and Karole Kasita.
She worked as a background artist on a Swangz Avenue project for artists like King Saha and Chameleone
