For just Shs1,000, long-distance bus passengers in Uganda can now secure a massive financial safety net against road accidents.
NIC Life Assurance Company Limited has officially launched Route Cover, a micro-life insurance product designed specifically for travelers. Rolled out at Skyz Hotel in Naguru, the initiative offers ordinary passengers critical financial protection that links directly to their bus ticket.
Unlike traditional policies that require annual premiums, Route Cover is tied directly to a single journey. Passengers can purchase the cover alongside their bus ticket, input their details digitally, and receive instant confirmation.
The product is designed to complement, not replace, existing Motor Third Party and Comprehensive Motor Insurance by providing immediate, passenger-specific relief.
The initiative addresses the devastating financial aftermath that families face following road crashes, such as medical bills, funeral costs, and sudden loss of income.
“Insurance must work when people need it most. Route Cover puts meaningful financial protection within reach of ordinary passengers at an affordable cost,” said Allen Amoko, CEO of NIC Life Assurance. “If Shs1,000 can provide meaningful financial support to a family at a moment of crisis, then we have moved insurance closer to the people.”
NIC Life is currently collaborating with the Uganda Bus Owners Association (UBOA) to smooth out the digital registration and premium collection process ahead of a pilot rollout.
Apollo Kashanku, Assistant Commissioner for Transport Regulation and Safety at the Ministry of Works and Transport, highly commended the initiative. He urged transport operators to embrace the system, noting that passenger welfare must extend beyond physical safety to financial resilience.
NIC made history by becoming the first and only insurance company to list on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE).
While NIC Life Assurance currently commands less than 1% of the total life insurance market share, its leadership structure—including Managing Director Anthony Lubandi—is explicitly prioritizing “discipline over scale”
Rather than chasing aggressive volume in traditional segments, NIC Life is shifting its weight toward sustainable growth. This strategy relies on building tight corporate governance, forging SME partnerships, and accelerating digital microinsurance deployment—such as the newly launched Route Cover—to tap into the vast, uninsured mass market of ordinary Ugandans
