Parliamentary and Local government election campaign kicks off today across the country,Deputy Electoral Commission Spokesperson, Paul Bukenya has confirmed.

According to the Electoral Commission (EC), a total of 2,025 candidates are contesting in the 353 directly-elected MP seats, 640 candidates are vying for 146 District and City Woman Representative posts, while 521 aspirants are contesting 146 City/District Chairperson positions.

Overall, 83,597 candidates are competing for 45,505 elective positions in the 2026 general election, ranging from president to Sub-county Councillor.

Bukenya called for strict adherence to established election guidelines during the campaign period.

“We are calling on all political parties, independent candidates, their agents, supporters, and the general public to follow the campaign guidelines issued for this period,” Bukenya said.

According to Bukenya,candidates are required to hold meetings within harmonized schedules approved by returning officers in each electoral area. Campaign rallies are only permitted between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

“We urge candidates and their supporters to ensure all campaign activities end by 6 p.m. to maintain order,” Bukenya added.

EC said security agencies will be briefed on all approved programs to ensure safe and peaceful conduct during campaigns.

He further cautioned politicians against use of inflammatory language, incitement, and defamatory remarks that can provoke public disorder or violence.

“We call on all candidates and their agents to campaign responsibly, without resorting to threats, hatred, or actions that could destabilize public peace,” Bukenya stressed..
