National Unity Platform candidate Gracious Kadondi has been declared the winner of the Makerere University Guild presidential election.
she now becomes the 92nd Guild President since Makerere University was established.
Kadondi secured 6,801 votes, defeating her closest rival, Hannah Karema Tumukunde of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), who garnered 5,787 votes.
Other candidates in the race included Peter Claveri Kyajja (1,493 votes), Daniel Nyaika (1,147), Mark Nzanga (595), Mike Muuzi Flugensio (408), Jimmy Prince Tebakor (184), Tracy Theresa Mbabazi (148), Ashiraf Ssemada (121), Timothy Serunkuma (68), Jackson Lubango (65), Timothy Bulumba (61), and Collin Atuha (35).
Kadondi will succeed James Churchill Ssentamu, who was elected on an independent ticket.
Her victory makes her the sixth female Guild President in Makerere’s history. She follows in the footsteps of Norah Njuba Bwaya (1987/88), Sarah Kagingo (1997/98), Susan Abbo (2007/08), Anna Adeke Ebaju (2013/14), and Shamim Nambassa (2021/22).
The election marks another milestone for female leadership at the university, reinforcing the growing role of women in student governance.
